Artist Shaunte Lewis creates beauty on canvas

More by this author

Whether she’s slaying women’s hair as a stylist or constructing masterpieces on canvas, Shaunte Lewis has a knack for creating beauty. Currently, her striking paintings are on display at Art Bank Gallery on Mass Ave. and at Lavish Salon near Broadripple. On Saturday, Jan. 6., Lewis will host Boss Lady Paint and Sip Party to give the artistically inclined a chance to create beautiful art.

The Recorder spoke with Lewis to learn more about her work:

Indianapolis Recorder Newspaper: How did you start as an artist?

Lewis: When I was in the fourth grade, I was in an art competition through my school and I won. I had my artwork published on a billboard in my hometown, and from then I knew I was meant to create. As far as I can remember, I’ve always been allowed to express myself through my art. My mother would let me paint on my walls and even cut up and make new clothes out of my old ones; I thought that I was a fashion designer in my early teen years. So I would say that many adults in my life made sure that I was able to express my creativity and create art in all forms without limitation.

What inspires you to create, and why do you feel it is important for people to express their creativity?

I am inspired by (the) women around me. I am also a natural hairstylist, so many of my art pieces reflect the hairstyles that I create on my hair clients. I like to create art that represents my culture, empowers women to be themselves and celebrates the power and strength of Black women in particular.

How would you describe your style?

My artwork is bold — either very colorful or black and white. I also enjoy creating abstract art. I wouldn’t say that I have a specific style. I don’t like to put my artwork in a box, because I like to experiment and try new things, but that (may) change over time. For now, I will continue to experiment and continue to explore my personal style.

Can you tell me about your upcoming painting classes?

This will actually be my first official class that I will be teaching. I have been invited to many sip and paint classes and always end up being the unofficial instructor. It’s something I’ve been wanting to do for some time now, so I’m finally deciding to take the leap and teach my first class. I plan to do many more classes in the upcoming year. I want to create a unique painting experience for my guests by offering paintings that reflect the African-American culture (while offering) something different and fresh. I will also offer classes on different mediums outside of the typical canvas paintings, such as handbags, denim, wine glasses and more.
