ThaiTanium brings the flavor

More by this author

I’m a Thai food fan but had yet to venture into ThaiTanium, which opened on Mass Ave. in 2017. Recently, I went for lunch and got there early enough to beat the crowd. I love the name, by the way.

Upon entering the restaurant, I was impressed with how well the red seats contrast with the rich, deep colored walls. I truly appreciate restaurants that offer lunch specials at actual affordable lunch prices. Lunch options are plentiful at ThaiTanium for $8.99. Lunch entrees are served with a spring roll, soup and salad, and there’s a choice of chicken, beef, pork, tofu or veggie. Shrimp is an additional $2.

I ordered the pad piew wan (stir-fried sweet sour sauce with pineapple, tomatoes, carrot, baby corn, bell pepper and onion) with tofu in medium heat. If you haven’t had Thai food before, you want to watch the heat level because it can get hot! If you like Chinese you’ll probably like Thai food. It’s very flavorful. Almost as soon as I ordered, it seemed like my bowl of soup came. It was a clear, flavorful broth with what seemed to be frozen peas and carrots, the same kind you’ll find in the freezer section of your grocery store. However, the broth saved the veggies, and the frozen-veggie crunch actually worked well in the soup.

Before I could finish my soup, my entree came out — maybe I should’ve been eating more instead of talking. However, I’m a slow eater, so it happens pretty regularly that I’m not finished with my appetizer before my meal arrives. The presentation of my entree was pleasing — a mound of rice with my pad piew wan on the side. My only complaint was the sauce from my entrée covered the bottom of my spring roll. I don’t like my food touching so I wasn’t happy to see this. I didn’t want my spring roll to get soggy so I ate it first.

The lunch portion was substantial. I wasn’t stuffed when I finished, but I was satisfied. I don’t like eating a huge lunch so this was more than enough and plenty tasty to boot.

According to the website, the chefs at ThaiTanium visit Thailand every year to stay up to date on food trends and bring them back to Indianapolis. I hope this is true. I’ll definitely go back to Thaitanium.
