SUMMARY:Indianapolis Opera presents WEST SIDE STORY at the Indianapolis Zoo
DESCRIPTION:In an exciting return to the Indianapolis Zoo\, with an original onsite design inspired by the beautiful Bicentennial Pavilion\, Indianapolis Opera presents a beloved musical classic\, West Side Story! \nA modern retelling of Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet\, West Side Story is set in 1950s New York\, where growing racial tensions between the Sharks\, a gang of first-generation Puerto Rican immigrants\, and the Jets\, made up of ‘American’ boys\, lead to an all-out street fight over territory. Meanwhile Tony\, best friend of the Jets’ leader Riff\, and Maria\, sister to Shark’s leader Bernardo\, unwittingly fall in love at a neighborhood dance\, despite their differing backgrounds. But the purity of their love is challenged as chaos\, prejudice\, and tragedy churn around them. \nBoasting a brilliant score from Leonard Bernstein and libretto from Stephen Sondheim with famous numbers\, like “Maria\,” “Tonight\,” and “Somewhere\,” this production features an internationally acclaimed cast and shares a hope for peace in trying times. \nWest Side Story\nMay 9\, 10\, & 11 at 7:00 PM\nThe Indianapolis Zoo\, Bicentennial Pavilion \nTicket Levels and Pricing:\nIndividual Tickets: Dress Circle /Green $92\, Level A/Orange $69\, Level B/Blue $57\, Level C/Yellow $39\nBistro Tables: 2-Top Dress Circle $240\, 4-Top Level A $400\, 4-Top Level B $320

SUMMARY:Mapping Asian and Pacific Islander American History in Indiana
DESCRIPTION:Though Asian Americans are one of the fastest-growing populations in Indiana\, with roots dating back to the late 1800s\, many of the community’s historic and cultural sites are overlooked. A Feb. 4th event presented by Indiana Landmarks in collaboration with national nonprofit Asian & Pacific Islander Americans in Historic Preservation (APIAHiP) will detail efforts to recognize those sites and engage Hoosiers in a conversation about the state’s history of Asian and Pacific Islander Americans. \n\nNow home to over 200\,000 Asian Americans\, Indiana boasts a wealth of significant and active Asian American cultural sites\, including the Tibetan Mongolian Buddhist Cultural Center in Bloomington and the An Lḁc Vietnamese Buddhist Temple in Indianapolis. Others\, such as the historic Bamboo Inn Chinese restaurant\, once located within Indy’s Circle Theatre Building\, and Columbia City’s soy sauce manufacturer Oriental Show-You Company\, founded by Japanese American Shinzo Ohki in 1924\, no longer exist\, but their stories offer insight into heritage that might otherwise be lost. \n\nJoin Indiana Landmarks at an interactive workshop on Feb. 4 at 6 p.m. in Indianapolis to learn about ongoing efforts to document\, celebrate\, and preserve Asian and Pacific Islander American historic sites in Indiana and nationwide. \n\nThe event’s agenda will include an overview of Asian and Pacific Islander American history in Indiana followed by an interactive presentation on APIAHiP’s “East at Main Street” mapping project. The second half of the workshop will provide time for attendees to contribute their own research and experiences\, or simply to pose questions about the history of Asian and Pacific Islander Americans in Indiana. \n \n“We want this event to kickstart a dialogue for people in Indiana to think consciously about what should be preserved and why\,” said Calvin Nguyen\, a preservation coordinator with Indiana Landmarks. \n\nThis event will be led by Huy Pham\, executive director of APIAHiP\, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting historic places and cultural resources significant to Asian and Pacific Islander Americans. \n\nAsian and Pacific Islander American is an umbrella term for a broad\, diverse group of Americans and their experiences. \n\nWHAT:                Mapping Asian and Pacific Islander American History in Indiana \n  \nWHEN:                 Feb. 4\, 6-7:30 p.m. \nWHERE:               Online and at Indiana Landmarks Center\, 1201 Central Ave.\, Indianapolis 46202 \nCOST:                    Free with RSVP \nRSVP:                    MappingAPIAHistory.eventbrite.com or 317-639-4534

The creator of the catchphrase ‘catch ah vibe\,’ Bryce said Scotchy has been a lot of hard work but has been very rewarding. \n“The catch phrase was inspired by the energy my family brings as a whole\,” Bryce said. “It’s always a good vibe.” \nBryce has the same inspiration for Scotchy as his father — to have 100 fast-casual restaurants in place by 2030. A lofty goal for some\, the duo is eager to plant their first stakes in the ground. \n“This is something my father and I have put a lot of time\, effort and money into\,” Bryce said. \nLlewellyn has seen great success in recent months\, selling out three pop-up guest tastings at the Fishers Test Kitchen\, a task that was challenging to balance with his work at Marion University but highly rewarding. \nLlewellyn has been an educator for over 20 years and is currently the director of recruitment for teacher partnership at Marian University. Prior to his current role\, Llewellyn was the principle at Tindley\, where he promoted excellence and the success of the students. That emphasis on success followed Llewellyn on his culinary journey. \n\nMarlon (right) and Bryce Llewellyn have worked together to formulate the concept of Scotchy Jamaican Grill. (Photo/Marlon Llewellyn)\n\nAs his day job continues\, Llewellyn is taking small steps towards his goals for Scotchy\, starting with only opening two days per week. \n“As time progresses\, I’ll continue working with the test kitchen staff and leaders\,” Llewellyn said. “We’ll add days as we go. It’s an incubator and the whole goal is to make sure I’m successful in this space and continue to grow the brand and the concept.” \nAs Scotchy opens their doors\, Llewellyn is already looking towards the future. Delivery\, private events and opening the restaurant to new markets are all on the table. \n“Our goal is to disrupt the fast-casual model of dining\,” Llewellyn said. “We have an amazing repertoire of food in Jamaica. I just want everyone to enjoy it.” \nLlewellyn is chipping away at that goal by opening the doors of location number one\, he says\, an accomplishment that has ignited his love of food and family. \n“I was excited\, but also very humbled and blessed for the opportunity\,” Llewellyn said. “The opportunity to honor my mom and her legacy and to learn and grown this concept that has been near and dear to my heart.” \nFor more information about Fishers Test Kitchen\, visit fisherstestkitchen.com.
