SUMMARY:Indiana Historical Society Festival of Trees
DESCRIPTION:The Indiana Historical Society’s (IHS) 2024 Festival of Trees will be celebrating its 11th anniversary as one of central Indiana’s biggest annual holiday traditions for families and people of all ages. \nThe 2024 Festival of Trees will run from Nov. 15\, 2024\, to Jan. 4\, 2025\, and features 85 elaborately decorated trees\, special programs\, and holiday-themed dining and shopping options. The winter wonderland of tree-light-fully decorated trees represent individuals\, families and organizations from all around Indiana. In addition\, guests can enjoy a massive\, 30-foot centerpiece tree in the center of Eli Lilly Hall that is viewable throughout most of the building. \nBack by popular demand\, Twilight Nights has been expanded to both Tuesdays and Thursdays between Thanksgiving and Christmas. These evenings feature special extended hours (5-8 p.m.) for those who wish to see the trees by night\, including some special performances on select nights. Twilight Nights are a great option for a date night or an after-work team outing. \nIn addition\, Festival of Trees will also feature classic holiday songs in the Cole Porter Room and a scene from the iconic film A Christmas Story\, the story of which was written by a Hoosier and set in Indiana. There will also be a friendly competition for which tree is the fan favorite\, and each guest will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite tree. The winning organization/tree will be honored with a special trophy made by ArtMix. \nThroughout Festival of Trees\, the Stardust Terrace Café by Jonathan Byrd’s will offer extended hours and additional menu options\, including special holiday-inspired treats and tasty specialty beverages for both children and grown-ups. Visitors can also take part in scavenger hunts for the Elf on the Shelf or the Weihnachtsgurke (10 pickle ornaments hidden in trees throughout the building). Festival of Trees guests can enjoy additional programming and performances\, and all IHS exhibits will be open for viewing. \nIHS will also auction off unique Tabletop Designer Trees. Developed and uniquely decorated by top central Indiana designers\, the 36” trees will be displayed in the Herbst Gallery Nov. 14 through Dec. 20.\nVisitors may bid on their favorite tree(s) online or by using the link next to each tree. Bidding will close on Dec. 20\, and the person with the highest bid can take home their tree on Dec. 21. \nGuests can also get their holiday shopping done from the comfort of their home or at Festival of Trees by shopping at the Basile History Market online or in-person. DESCRIPTION:The Visiting Scholars Lecture in partnership with Dr. Tyrone McKinley Freeman\, IU Presidential Arts & Humanities Fellow present “How Black Women Funded the Civil Rights Movement: A Community Lecture and Conversation with Dr. Tanisha C. Ford.” \nDr. Tanisha C. Ford will present a keynote lecture about her 2024 NAACP Image Award-winning book\, Our Secret Society. This book chronicles the life and impact of Mollie Moon\, a Black woman socialite based in New York City who raised significant amounts of money for the Civil Rights Movement through fashion shows and other means. \n Following the lecture\, Freeman and Ford will sit down for a conversation about fundraising and activism across American history and the current challenges and issues facing Black women and Black-led nonprofits doing liberation work. A community Q&A and a book signing will follow. \n This event on October 24\, from 5 p.m.-8 p.m.\, is free and open to the public. Registration is required. \n Ford is an NAACP Image Award-winning writer\, cultural critic\, and Professor of History at The Graduate Center\, CUNY. She has forged an international reputation for her groundbreaking research on the history of Black style/fashion and social movements. She earned a Ph.D. in twentieth-century U.S. history from Indiana University-Bloomington. \n Freeman is the author of Madam C.J. Walker’s Gospel of Giving: Black Women’s Philanthropy during Jim Crow. SUMMARY:Night at the Boo Bash at Indiana State Museum Oct. 11
DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, Oct. 11\, the Indiana State Museum will stay open late from 6-8 p.m. for their signature Halloween-themed event\, Night at the Boo Bash. \nThe event is for guests of all ages and features interactive games and activities across three floors led by cast members. \n\nOne of the science demos at the Indiana State Museum for Night at the Boo Bash. At Dr. Rose’s Mad Science Lab guests can watch chemical reactions and make their own fizzy bath bombs to take home and at Dunky’s candy wheel visitors can win some pre-Halloween treats. At Cricket’s critter catapults guests can launch plastic insects onto webs and at Ross the Sloth’s Giggle Graveyard\, participants can use a UV flashlight to make laughable shapes while other guests measure their shrieks inside the Fred the Mastodon scream booth. \nGuests are encouraged to wear costumes to participate in a contest for prizes and dress comfortably for the dance floor. \n\nGuests are encouraged to dress in costumes for the Night at the Boo Bash at the Indiana State Museum. (Photos/Indiana State Museum)\n\nDuring the event\, Good Night Forest\, the museum’s popular seasonal experience will be open and is included with the $12 ticket. The exhibit showcases what animals emerge after the sun goes down\, featuring hand-drawn insects by local artist Penelope Dullaghan and specimens from the museum’s collection. \nThe Night at the Boo Bash is one of many events throughout October. Haunted Happenings continue Wednesdays and Fridays from Oct. 16-25 with Twilight Tales. Each evening features two tour opportunities: the Strange Encounters Tour at 7 p.m. designed for families and the Beyond the Grave Tour at 8:30 p.m. for adults. These after-hours activities will guide guests through exhibits with flashlights. SUMMARY:Scotchy Jamaican Grill opens at Fishers Test Kitchen
DESCRIPTION:Scotchy Jamaican Grill\, created by Marlon and Bryce Llewellyn\, has officially joined the Fishers Test Kitchen as its fourth pod\, offering dishes like 24-hour marinated jerk pork and salted cod fish fritters to guests every Friday and Saturday starting Oct. 11. \nBorn in Jamaica to a restauranteur mother\, Llewellyn was called to action one morning in church. \n“The Holy Spirit spoke to me\, and it said\, ‘I’m not going to let you leave this Earth until you have tried everything you need to try\,’” Llewellyn said. \nAfter that\, Llewellyn and his son\, Bryce\, developed Scotchy Jamaican Grill\, dedicated to embodying the spirit of traditional Jamaican cuisine and honoring his late mother. \n“I think she’d be very pleased with me\,” Llewellyn said. “Like ‘Yes\, he’s finally doing what I told him to.’” \n\nMarlon Llewellyn’s mother\, Carol “Blossom” (left)\, and his grandmother\, Gwendolyn Campbell\, inspired him to create Scotchy Jamaican Grill. (Photo/Marlon Llewellyn)\n\nBryce is studying business at Eastern Michigan University and is hoping to expand the business through an online ordering system in Michigan following the Indy grand opening. The creator of the catchphrase ‘catch ah vibe\,’ Bryce said Scotchy has been a lot of hard work but has been very rewarding. \n“The catch phrase was inspired by the energy my family brings as a whole\,” Bryce said. “It’s always a good vibe.” \nBryce has the same inspiration for Scotchy as his father — to have 100 fast-casual restaurants in place by 2030. A lofty goal for some\, the duo is eager to plant their first stakes in the ground. \n“This is something my father and I have put a lot of time\, effort and money into\,” Bryce said. \nLlewellyn has seen great success in recent months\, selling out three pop-up guest tastings at the Fishers Test Kitchen\, a task that was challenging to balance with his work at Marion University but highly rewarding. \nLlewellyn has been an educator for over 20 years and is currently the director of recruitment for teacher partnership at Marian University. Prior to his current role\, Llewellyn was the principle at Tindley\, where he promoted excellence and the success of the students. (Photo/Marlon Llewellyn)\n\nAs his day job continues\, Llewellyn is taking small steps towards his goals for Scotchy\, starting with only opening two days per week. \n“As time progresses\, I’ll continue working with the test kitchen staff and leaders\,” Llewellyn said. “We’ll add days as we go. It’s an incubator and the whole goal is to make sure I’m successful in this space and continue to grow the brand and the concept.” \nAs Scotchy opens their doors\, Llewellyn is already looking towards the future. Delivery\, private events and opening the restaurant to new markets are all on the table. \n“Our goal is to disrupt the fast-casual model of dining\,” Llewellyn said. “We have an amazing repertoire of food in Jamaica. I just want everyone to enjoy it.” \nLlewellyn is chipping away at that goal by opening the doors of location number one\, he says\, an accomplishment that has ignited his love of food and family. \n“I was excited\, but also very humbled and blessed for the opportunity\,” Llewellyn said. “The opportunity to honor my mom and her legacy and to learn and grown this concept that has been near and dear to my heart.” \nFor more information about Fishers Test Kitchen\, visit fisherstestkitchen.com. SUMMARY:Gary International Black Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:The 14th annual Gary International Black Film Festival from Oct. 10-13 will offer viewers the chance to see over 50 films with world premieres\, panel discussions\, filmmaker chats\, parties and award ceremonies. \nThe festival is in the heart of Gary\, 30 minutes from downtown Chicago. At the center of the festival are Black indie filmmakers\, several of which will be honored with awards throughout the weekend. \nLeading up to the weekend\, the festival will celebrate Deon Taylor Day on Oct. 8 in recognition of his work as a local filmmaker. \nA screening of a film at the Gary International Black Film Festival. The events leading up to the festival will feature in-person collaborations with local businesses and organizations\, including a Festival Pre-Funk at Brown Skin Coffee Tea on Oct. 10. The following day\, there will be a red carpet opening with featured film premieres and a gala closing night awards ceremony. \nThe festival showcases the roots and stories of international film makers across the Black diaspora. The festival uses film “as a catalyst for stimulating cultural activity to enhance the cultural capital of our hometown\,” according to the website. \nEligible films for the festival must be by or about Black people\, and audiences vote for awards in the following categories: \n\nBest narrative feature\n\n\nBest documentary feature\n\n\nBest narrative short\n\n\nBest documentary short\n\n\nBest youth film\n\n\nOther awards by discretion\n\nAudiences will be able to vote for their favorite both in-person and online.
