SUMMARY:The People Speak: Good Trouble\, Public Witness\, and a Collective Humanity
DESCRIPTION:The People Speak (TPS) is a two-day event that builds on the work of late historian Howard Zinn (1922-2010) to breathe life and energy into the extraordinary contributions of those who helped to create a refined vision for society and the world. \nDay One (Voices) features a live stage presentation with a diverse cast of individuals reading excerpts from historically and culturally significant literature (ex.\, speeches\, poems). A diverse assortment of orators will be invited to read brief excerpts (ex.\, letters\, critical essays\, speeches\, poetry) from various historical figures. Invited readers will include faculty\, staff\, students\, community partners\, artists\, activists\, and young people from various backgrounds and fields. TPS Day One will conclude with a live music set featuring the Rob Dixon Quintet. \nDay Two (Visions) features invited scholars and public intellectuals in a dynamic assortment of breakout sessions\, panel discussions\, and mini keynotes that build on our central theme. Day Two also will features multiple local visual artists creating live art on-site. \nTPS foregrounds the enduring power of literature\, the arts & humanities\, and the human imagination as tools to confront and transcend social challenges\, to amplify the public good\, and to foster a collective future rooted in radical love and critical hope. Our goals for this event are to provide a public forum that: \n• encourages inclusion\, fosters dialogue\, and promotes creative engagement and civic discourse.\n• promotes engagement with history and shared public memory as tools to promote deeper understanding of our current and future social & political contexts.\n• encourages scholarly engagement\, production and dissemination of diverse forms of research ranging from empirical to creative scholarship. \nRSVP HERE: https://tinyurl.com/4sxpmm5n \nTHIS EVENT IS FREE & OPEN TO THE PUBLIC
