SUMMARY:Mapping Asian and Pacific Islander American History in Indiana
DESCRIPTION:Though Asian Americans are one of the fastest-growing populations in Indiana\, with roots dating back to the late 1800s\, many of the community’s historic and cultural sites are overlooked. A Feb. 4th event presented by Indiana Landmarks in collaboration with national nonprofit Asian & Pacific Islander Americans in Historic Preservation (APIAHiP) will detail efforts to recognize those sites and engage Hoosiers in a conversation about the state’s history of Asian and Pacific Islander Americans. \n\nNow home to over 200\,000 Asian Americans\, Indiana boasts a wealth of significant and active Asian American cultural sites\, including the Tibetan Mongolian Buddhist Cultural Center in Bloomington and the An Lḁc Vietnamese Buddhist Temple in Indianapolis. Others\, such as the historic Bamboo Inn Chinese restaurant\, once located within Indy’s Circle Theatre Building\, and Columbia City’s soy sauce manufacturer Oriental Show-You Company\, founded by Japanese American Shinzo Ohki in 1924\, no longer exist\, but their stories offer insight into heritage that might otherwise be lost. \n\nJoin Indiana Landmarks at an interactive workshop on Feb. 4 at 6 p.m. in Indianapolis to learn about ongoing efforts to document\, celebrate\, and preserve Asian and Pacific Islander American historic sites in Indiana and nationwide. \n\nThe event’s agenda will include an overview of Asian and Pacific Islander American history in Indiana followed by an interactive presentation on APIAHiP’s “East at Main Street” mapping project. The second half of the workshop will provide time for attendees to contribute their own research and experiences\, or simply to pose questions about the history of Asian and Pacific Islander Americans in Indiana. \n \n“We want this event to kickstart a dialogue for people in Indiana to think consciously about what should be preserved and why\,” said Calvin Nguyen\, a preservation coordinator with Indiana Landmarks. \n\nThis event will be led by Huy Pham\, executive director of APIAHiP\, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting historic places and cultural resources significant to Asian and Pacific Islander Americans. \n\nAsian and Pacific Islander American is an umbrella term for a broad\, diverse group of Americans and their experiences. \n\nWHAT:                Mapping Asian and Pacific Islander American History in Indiana \n  \nWHEN:                 Feb. 4\, 6-7:30 p.m. \nWHERE:               Online and at Indiana Landmarks Center\, 1201 Central Ave.\, Indianapolis 46202 \nCOST:                    Free with RSVP \nRSVP:                    MappingAPIAHistory.eventbrite.com or 317-639-4534

SUMMARY:Greater Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church 90th Anniversary Banquet
DESCRIPTION:Greater Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church is excited to announce its 90th Church Anniversary Banquet\, which will be held on Saturday\, November 2\, 2024\, from 5:30 to 9:00 p.m. at Primo Banquet Hall\, located at 2615 National Avenue. The event will feature special musical guests Men in the Fire and a sermonette delivered by Pastor Shawn Floyde of New Christian Hope Missionary Baptist Church. \nThis milestone celebration comes after the church recently faced a significant challenge when a fire caused substantial damage to its building. Early one morning\, church leaders were alerted by the security system and arrived to find the church engulfed in flames. Though many belongings were lost\, the building itself\, along with the pews and a Bible\, miraculously survived the blaze. \nFor 90 years\, Greater Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church has served as a cornerstone of the Riverside community\, providing a place of worship for its 40-member congregation. Despite the setback\, the church remains steadfast in its mission\, with the upcoming anniversary banquet symbolizing a new beginning for the congregation. \nPastor Ramon Batts expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support received from fellow\nchurches and community members. “This fire is not the end of our story; it’s a new chapter in the history of our church. We will continue to worship\, celebrate\, and look toward a brighter\nfuture\,” Batts said.

SUMMARY:Parvo vaccination clinic
DESCRIPTION:Indy’s Parvo Prevention Project will host a free Parvo vaccination clinic from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Oct. 12 at LifeJourney Church. \nThe event is sponsored by LDR Rescue and will vaccinate dogs against distemper\, hepatitis\, Parvovirus and parainfluenza. In addition to the vaccinations\, dogs will receive microchips to help veterinarians and owners locate them if lost. Ministerial staff from the church will be there to provide blessings for dogs and families. \n“Too many dogs aren’t getting the affordable and effective vaccinations for the highly lethal\, expensive-to-treat Parvovirus\, and the results are heartbreaking\,” said Robin Herman\, the founder of LDR Rescue and organizer of the event. \nGiven the low cost of the vaccine\, the proportion of deaths is unfortunate\, Herman said. \n“When new puppy owners meet with most vets for the first time\, they are confronted with packaged options that can run up to several hundred dollars\,” Herman said. “If they do nothing else\, they should ask for the Parvo vaccine\, which can cost as little as $16.” \nHerman said the goal of the project is to inoculate 500 dogs at the clinic and conduct other events throughout the year. The first event earlier this year vaccinated 385 dogs. \n“Our rescue has fostered more dogs than ever since the pandemic who are suffering from Parvo\,” she said. “People adopted dogs who didn’t understand the risk\, and at the same time\, veterinarians have been busier than ever because of all the adoptions.” \nThe vaccinations were donated by a nonprofit\, Petco Love\, making the event free to dog owners and a great opportunity to get vaccinations. \n“It is heartbreaking when any pet suffers or dies from a disease that could have been prevented\,” said Susanne Kogut\, Petco Love president. “By creating greater awareness and making this crucial preventative care more accessible to pets not currently receiving these life-saving vaccines\, we can prevent the dangerous spread of disease.” \nDog owners will be able to drive through the clinic. Owners will receive guidance on any recommended immunization follow-ups.
