SUMMARY:Greater Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church 90th Anniversary Banquet
DESCRIPTION:Greater Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church is excited to announce its 90th Church Anniversary Banquet\, which will be held on Saturday\, November 2\, 2024\, from 5:30 to 9:00 p.m. at Primo Banquet Hall\, located at 2615 National Avenue. The event will feature special musical guests Men in the Fire and a sermonette delivered by Pastor Shawn Floyde of New Christian Hope Missionary Baptist Church. \nThis milestone celebration comes after the church recently faced a significant challenge when a fire caused substantial damage to its building. Early one morning\, church leaders were alerted by the security system and arrived to find the church engulfed in flames. Though many belongings were lost\, the building itself\, along with the pews and a Bible\, miraculously survived the blaze. \nFor 90 years\, Greater Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church has served as a cornerstone of the Riverside community\, providing a place of worship for its 40-member congregation. Despite the setback\, the church remains steadfast in its mission\, with the upcoming anniversary banquet symbolizing a new beginning for the congregation. \nPastor Ramon Batts expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support received from fellow\nchurches and community members. “This fire is not the end of our story; it’s a new chapter in the history of our church. We will continue to worship\, celebrate\, and look toward a brighter\nfuture\,” Batts said.

SUMMARY:Parvo vaccination clinic
DESCRIPTION:Indy’s Parvo Prevention Project will host a free Parvo vaccination clinic from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Oct. 12 at LifeJourney Church. \nThe event is sponsored by LDR Rescue and will vaccinate dogs against distemper\, hepatitis\, Parvovirus and parainfluenza. In addition to the vaccinations\, dogs will receive microchips to help veterinarians and owners locate them if lost. Ministerial staff from the church will be there to provide blessings for dogs and families. \n“Too many dogs aren’t getting the affordable and effective vaccinations for the highly lethal\, expensive-to-treat Parvovirus\, and the results are heartbreaking\,” said Robin Herman\, the founder of LDR Rescue and organizer of the event. \nGiven the low cost of the vaccine\, the proportion of deaths is unfortunate\, Herman said. \n“When new puppy owners meet with most vets for the first time\, they are confronted with packaged options that can run up to several hundred dollars\,” Herman said. “If they do nothing else\, they should ask for the Parvo vaccine\, which can cost as little as $16.” \nHerman said the goal of the project is to inoculate 500 dogs at the clinic and conduct other events throughout the year. The first event earlier this year vaccinated 385 dogs. \n“Our rescue has fostered more dogs than ever since the pandemic who are suffering from Parvo\,” she said. “People adopted dogs who didn’t understand the risk\, and at the same time\, veterinarians have been busier than ever because of all the adoptions.” \nThe vaccinations were donated by a nonprofit\, Petco Love\, making the event free to dog owners and a great opportunity to get vaccinations. \n“It is heartbreaking when any pet suffers or dies from a disease that could have been prevented\,” said Susanne Kogut\, Petco Love president. “By creating greater awareness and making this crucial preventative care more accessible to pets not currently receiving these life-saving vaccines\, we can prevent the dangerous spread of disease.” \nDog owners will be able to drive through the clinic. Owners will receive guidance on any recommended immunization follow-ups. SUMMARY:Scotchy Jamaican Grill opens at Fishers Test Kitchen
DESCRIPTION:Scotchy Jamaican Grill\, created by Marlon and Bryce Llewellyn\, has officially joined the Fishers Test Kitchen as its fourth pod\, offering dishes like 24-hour marinated jerk pork and salted cod fish fritters to guests every Friday and Saturday starting Oct. 11. \nBorn in Jamaica to a restauranteur mother\, Llewellyn was called to action one morning in church. \n“The Holy Spirit spoke to me\, and it said\, ‘I’m not going to let you leave this Earth until you have tried everything you need to try\,’” Llewellyn said. \nAfter that\, Llewellyn and his son\, Bryce\, developed Scotchy Jamaican Grill\, dedicated to embodying the spirit of traditional Jamaican cuisine and honoring his late mother. \n“I think she’d be very pleased with me\,” Llewellyn said. “Like ‘Yes\, he’s finally doing what I told him to.’” \n\nMarlon Llewellyn’s mother\, Carol “Blossom” (left)\, and his grandmother\, Gwendolyn Campbell\, inspired him to create Scotchy Jamaican Grill. (Photo/Marlon Llewellyn)\n\nBryce is studying business at Eastern Michigan University and is hoping to expand the business through an online ordering system in Michigan following the Indy grand opening. The creator of the catchphrase ‘catch ah vibe\,’ Bryce said Scotchy has been a lot of hard work but has been very rewarding. \n“The catch phrase was inspired by the energy my family brings as a whole\,” Bryce said. “It’s always a good vibe.” \nBryce has the same inspiration for Scotchy as his father — to have 100 fast-casual restaurants in place by 2030. A lofty goal for some\, the duo is eager to plant their first stakes in the ground. \n“This is something my father and I have put a lot of time\, effort and money into\,” Bryce said. \nLlewellyn has seen great success in recent months\, selling out three pop-up guest tastings at the Fishers Test Kitchen\, a task that was challenging to balance with his work at Marion University but highly rewarding. \nLlewellyn has been an educator for over 20 years and is currently the director of recruitment for teacher partnership at Marian University. Prior to his current role\, Llewellyn was the principle at Tindley\, where he promoted excellence and the success of the students. That emphasis on success followed Llewellyn on his culinary journey. \n\nMarlon (right) and Bryce Llewellyn have worked together to formulate the concept of Scotchy Jamaican Grill. (Photo/Marlon Llewellyn)\n\nAs his day job continues\, Llewellyn is taking small steps towards his goals for Scotchy\, starting with only opening two days per week. \n“As time progresses\, I’ll continue working with the test kitchen staff and leaders\,” Llewellyn said. “We’ll add days as we go. It’s an incubator and the whole goal is to make sure I’m successful in this space and continue to grow the brand and the concept.” \nAs Scotchy opens their doors\, Llewellyn is already looking towards the future. Delivery\, private events and opening the restaurant to new markets are all on the table. \n“Our goal is to disrupt the fast-casual model of dining\,” Llewellyn said. “We have an amazing repertoire of food in Jamaica. I just want everyone to enjoy it.” \nLlewellyn is chipping away at that goal by opening the doors of location number one\, he says\, an accomplishment that has ignited his love of food and family. \n“I was excited\, but also very humbled and blessed for the opportunity\,” Llewellyn said. “The opportunity to honor my mom and her legacy and to learn and grown this concept that has been near and dear to my heart.” \nFor more information about Fishers Test Kitchen\, visit fisherstestkitchen.com. SUMMARY:Indy Walk to End Alzheimer’s

The goal for this year’s walk is $1.5 million. \n“We are so grateful to this community for leading the way to end this disease — in more ways than one\,” said Natalie Sutton\, executive director for the Alzheimer’s Association Greater Indiana Chapter. “Not only is Indianapolis one of the top cities in the country when it comes to fundraising\, we are home to some of the most exciting dementia research currently underway. There are now two FDA-approved treatments to slow the progression of this disease in the early stages — with more on the way. This is tremendous progress — but we won’t stop fighting until there is a cure.” \nNearly 7 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s\, and more than 11 million provide care for Alzheimer’s and other dementias. \nTo read more about the Alzheimer’s Association and to register for the event\, visit act.alz.org/Indianapolis. \nBlood tests\, weight loss drug may improve Alzheimer’s diagnosis and treatment – Indianapolis Recorder \nContact Health & Environmental Reporter Hanna Rauworth at 317-762-7854 or follow her on Instagram at @hanna.rauworth.
