SUMMARY:Beyond the Sidelines to benefit Kicking the Stigma
DESCRIPTION:Beyond the Sidelines\, a fundraiser benefitting the Colts Kicking the Stigma grants\, will raise awareness at a sold-out event Oct. 4 at the Biltwell Event Center. \nThe fundraiser will benefit the Jim Irsay family and the Indianapolis Colts’ efforts to raise awareness and end the stigma surrounding mental health illnesses. \nThe event will include a performance by X Ambassadors\, an exhibition from the Jim Irsay Collection\, a drone light show\, appearances by Colts players and interactive games. \n\nColts player Adonai Mitchell (10) with a spectatular play against the Pittsburgh Steelers on September 29\, 2024 at Lucas Oil Stadium in downtown Indianapolis\, IN. To date\, the grants have awarded $6.4 million to more than 60 community organizations. \nWhile the event is sold out\, guests can visit kickingthestigma.org to bid on virtual auction items such as autographed Colts memorabilia\, experiences with current and former Colts players and coaches and other items. SUMMARY:Gary International Black Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:The 14th annual Gary International Black Film Festival from Oct. 10-13 will offer viewers the chance to see over 50 films with world premieres\, panel discussions\, filmmaker chats\, parties and award ceremonies. \nThe festival is in the heart of Gary\, 30 minutes from downtown Chicago. At the center of the festival are Black indie filmmakers\, several of which will be honored with awards throughout the weekend. \nLeading up to the weekend\, the festival will celebrate Deon Taylor Day on Oct. 8 in recognition of his work as a local filmmaker. \nA screening of a film at the Gary International Black Film Festival. The events leading up to the festival will feature in-person collaborations with local businesses and organizations\, including a Festival Pre-Funk at Brown Skin Coffee Tea on Oct. 10. The following day\, there will be a red carpet opening with featured film premieres and a gala closing night awards ceremony. \nThe festival showcases the roots and stories of international film makers across the Black diaspora. The festival uses film “as a catalyst for stimulating cultural activity to enhance the cultural capital of our hometown\,” according to the website. \nEligible films for the festival must be by or about Black people\, and audiences vote for awards in the following categories: \n\nBest narrative feature\n\n\nBest documentary feature\n\n\nBest narrative short\n\n\nBest documentary short\n\n\nBest youth film\n\n\nOther awards by discretion\n\nAudiences will be able to vote for their favorite both in-person and online. Tickets for the Gary International Black Film Festival are $100\, and virtual-only are $40. SUMMARY:Parvo vaccination clinic
DESCRIPTION:Indy’s Parvo Prevention Project will host a free Parvo vaccination clinic from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Oct. 12 at LifeJourney Church. \nThe event is sponsored by LDR Rescue and will vaccinate dogs against distemper\, hepatitis\, Parvovirus and parainfluenza. In addition to the vaccinations\, dogs will receive microchips to help veterinarians and owners locate them if lost. Ministerial staff from the church will be there to provide blessings for dogs and families. \n“Too many dogs aren’t getting the affordable and effective vaccinations for the highly lethal\, expensive-to-treat Parvovirus\, and the results are heartbreaking\,” said Robin Herman\, the founder of LDR Rescue and organizer of the event. \nGiven the low cost of the vaccine\, the proportion of deaths is unfortunate\, Herman said. \n“When new puppy owners meet with most vets for the first time\, they are confronted with packaged options that can run up to several hundred dollars\,” Herman said. “If they do nothing else\, they should ask for the Parvo vaccine\, which can cost as little as $16.” \nHerman said the goal of the project is to inoculate 500 dogs at the clinic and conduct other events throughout the year. The first event earlier this year vaccinated 385 dogs. \n“Our rescue has fostered more dogs than ever since the pandemic who are suffering from Parvo\,” she said. “People adopted dogs who didn’t understand the risk\, and at the same time\, veterinarians have been busier than ever because of all the adoptions.” \nThe vaccinations were donated by a nonprofit\, Petco Love\, making the event free to dog owners and a great opportunity to get vaccinations. \n“It is heartbreaking when any pet suffers or dies from a disease that could have been prevented\,” said Susanne Kogut\, Petco Love president. “By creating greater awareness and making this crucial preventative care more accessible to pets not currently receiving these life-saving vaccines\, we can prevent the dangerous spread of disease.” \nDog owners will be able to drive through the clinic. Owners will receive guidance on any recommended immunization follow-ups.
