The latest update on the nation’s swine flu cases still shows Indiana with three confirmed cases of the illness even though there’s been a nationwide surge in cases.
The federal government said Sunday that nationwide the number of confirmed swine flu cases had grown to 226 in 30 states, up from 160 in 21 states on Saturday.
Officials say that increase largely reflects the government’s efforts to catch up on a backlog of lab tests rather than a sudden spurt in new infections.
Two Indianapolis elementary schools that each had one student with a confirmed case of the illness will be closed this week as a precaution. The schools’ roughly 1,100 students can return to school May 11 if their parents or guardians provide proof that they are healthy.
