A sure bet for great sandwiches

Recently, a close friend encouraged me to visit Big City Grill & Lemonade, calling it one of the “best” places to get a great sandwich.

Recorder staff who has written restaurant reviews for years have heard a variety of places being described as “best,” and some are indeed great, but others may be far from best. Therefore, we have become a little jaded and think, “yeah, right” when we hear the term.

Big City Grille & Lemonade, however, could actually be described as one of the best establishments serving Philly-style sandwiches.

Located in a strip mall near the intersection of 38th and North Meridian, Big City Grill has a pleasant atmosphere with a clean, lively ambiance.

Guests should be immediately impressed – and enticed – when they see the menu. Perhaps the best known offering of the restaurant is its sandwiches, which come in a regular “Big City” style, or in a “Philly” type offering that includes your choice of meat(s) along with mushroom, onion, green pepper, provolone cheese and Big City Grill’s special mayo.

Some of the “Big City” type sandwiches range from the Italian Beef and Spicy Chicken, to Barbecue Beef and Rib Eye. Philly sandwiches, which look more like subs, include selections such as the Philly Steak and Teriyaki Chicken, to the Wild West and Ragin’ Cajun.

Individually, most of these very filling sandwiches are reasonably priced between $4.99 and $6.49. All of them are available in a combo that includes french fries and a lemonade.

After initial trepidation about Big City Grille actually living up to its hype, I have gone twice since my friend’s recommendation. I have had the pleasure of enjoying the Beef and Chicken Sandwich, and the restaurant piles on plenty of awesome chopped meat and mayo on top of soft, fresh bread.

On the next visit, I picked up both the gyro and the Wild West. The Wild West is an excellent beef offering with a nice southwestern kick. The gyro sandwich comes with sliced beef, onion, tomato and mayo. This rendition of the traditional Greek favorite is worth trying.

In addition to its sandwiches, guests can also enjoy Big City Grill’s flavorful buffalo and chicken wings, as well as burgers, loaded nachos, hot dogs, fish entrées (catfish or perch) and specialty items such as steak or chicken tacos, chicken pitas and turkey ribs and fries.

If you have room for dessert, you can’t go wrong in that area either, with options such as cheesecake, peach cobbler, banana pudding and cake.

Then, there is no way I can talk about Big City Grill without mentioning the lemonade, which comes in a variety of flavors such as blue raspberry, grape, pina colada and pineapple. Very refreshing and perfect for the summer.

Big City Grill makes placing an order convenient for customers by offering delivery and online ordering. Of course, an enjoyable part of the eating experience is actually going to the restaurant and encountering its professional staff and friendly owner, Steve, who seems genuinely happy to see customers (especially new ones) and treats them like a special guest in his home.
