Food is a connector for me. Coming from a large family, get-together’s almost always equal food, and I can’t say that I’m mad about it. We have our family traditions, like my mom’s greens, my grandmother’s sweet potato pies, now made by my cousin, my family favorite baked macaroni and cheese. Our family sing-offs, and the epic game of Scrabble. Many of the recipes could even been guarded as family secrets, as they have been in our family for decades. We do this all in the name of tradition. You know, the things that pull us together.
As you go through this holiday season, and connect with loved ones, share the stories of how your family came to be. Sure, you have heard it before, but it still matters. Share that recipe with your not-so-favorite cousin, who is trying to cook for her new beau. Traditions. They are the ties that bind us. They are what make our families unique. Over a warm comforting meal, memories are made, giggles are shared, games are played. As we take part in this time with family, we strengthen our connections even more. These are the connections that matter. Savor them. Embrace them.
