I love pizza, however every now and then I want a good sandwich or sub. Hopelessly trying to find a quick dinner in order to get out of the frigid and icy elements, I decided to stop by Firehouse Subs.
Iāve passed by the West 86th Street location numerous times, but never made a concerted effort to go inside. I was pleasantly surprised how much of a contrast Firehouse Subs were from typical sub chains, but not so far gone that the typical consumer couldnāt relate.
I also loved the fireman theme. Firehouse Subs founders Chris and Robin Sorensen come from a strong firefighting and entrepreneurial heritage, so it was destined they combine the two.
After careful thought, I decided on a hot, specialty sandwich, the Engineer. This eight-inch sub was filled with smoked turkey breast, melted swiss and sautĆ©ed mushrooms, served āfully involved.ā
This sandwich was a much-needed break from a boring cold-cut sandwich. The bread was warm and fresh and the turkey also tasted like it was freshly sliced. There was the perfect amount of cheese and mushrooms, which gave the sub a wonderful balance.
It wasnāt greasy, like some sandwiches of this caliber can be, but it wasnāt dry nor did it have that ācardboard healthyā type of taste.
My equally hungry husband ordered the 12-inch Club on a Sub with smoked turkey breast, Virginia honey ham, crispy Smithfield bacon and melted Monterey Jack also āfully involved.ā
Usually he offers me some of his food, but not this time. I guess it was too good to share.
I seriously considered ordering the Corned Beef brisket or the Premium Roast Beef sandwich. Maybe on the next visit Iāll see what itās all about.
To round out the meal, we ordered the combo, which consisted of a pickle, either chips or a cookie and a soft drink. I got the chips, he got the cookie and I ate both pickles!
Iām glad Iāve found another restaurant that serves good, reasonably priced sandwiches. The sandwich combos were about $17 total.
Change is sometimes difficult for me, but I welcome change that is delicious.
In addition to the West 86th Street location (in the Pyramid Place plaza right across from McDonalds), there are Firehouse Subs restaurants all over Indianapolis (such as Broad Ripple, Castleton, Speedway and Circle Center Mall) and Central Indiana cities such as Greenwood and Avon.
