Brandi Briggs likes for her hair to look good. To achieve her desired appearance, she opts for hair extensions. While she’s had satisfactory looks using various kinds of weaves, like many women, searching for the perfect hair extension was like looking for a unicorn.
“I’ve tried a lot of different companies. I had issues with tangling in the back and shedding. And some companies, as soon as you take it out of the packaging, it looks damaged,” said Briggs.

Miller and Tyrece Butler, his pal of seven years, knew they had an entrepreneurial spirit, but realized they weren’t maximizing their full potential. Butler had a wealth of ideas that was added to the foundation of a hair company Miller began last July. With their ideas and natural business savvy, the men created Hair 4 U, an online hair extension company that specializes in virgin Brazilian and Malaysian human hair.
Being that the pair is the prototypical African-American male, they not only had to learn how to navigate the waters of the hair supplying/buying business, but also become proficient in the types of human hair that makes the best extensions. For them, quality would not be compromised.
“I talked to a lot of women and got their feedback on hair and what makes certain hair companies better than others,” said Miller, president of Hair 4 U.
Butler, vice president, adds that YouTube and online hair reviews were beneficial tools during their “Hair Extension 101” phase. Then there was the task of creating a website that effectively showcased their product that was also easy to use.
Buying hair extensions online may seem odd, but hair experts maintain that going to a beauty supply store for weave is an archaic practice and that many stores offer inferior products. Today, hair extension seekers turn to their computers when looking to add to or temporarily alter their tresses using quality products. Online hair is more pricey, however extension wearers say you get what you pay for.

Providing great customer service was the cherry on top of creating Hair 4 U, which officially launched in November 2013.
“The customer service Mauri gives speaks for itself. He’s hands on with the product and educates you along the way. He really wants you to be happy. That’s why I gave him a try because his customer service was the best over anyone else,” said Briggs.
What gives Hair 4 U an edge over their competition is due to gold star customer service and excellent products, word of mouth has made the company very popular. Also opting out of a brick and mortar business and choosing an online company virtually brings Hair 4 U hair to any hair extension user. Briggs, who lives in Indianapolis, said her mother and boss loved her hair extensions so much, they now purchase extensions from Hair 4 U from their homes in Alabama and Nevada.
Hair 4 U is growing in popularity due to their online accessibility, however, Miller and Butler still pound the pavement showcasing their human hair extensions.
“It lasts longer and you can reuse it. I can get two or three sew-ins out of their hair. It’s well conditioned and holds a curl well. Things like that are important to hairstylists,” said LeTisha Sanders, as she curls a client’s hair in her Castleton hair salon. “Mauri and Tyrece are great guys and they explain everything well.”
Miller and Butler have future plans to expand their company such as offering hair products that complement the hair extensions they offer as well as helping women host hair parties.
Growing their company is a top priority, yet the men hope to build more than just a great business – they want to be a positive example in a retail field that is underrepresented by African-Americans.
“You have two Black young men in the business that you can now come to,” said Butler. “We have the best product out there and we get great feedback from customers which helps us serve you better.”
