The Hoosier Lottery has agreed to pay $2.75 million to settle a racial discrimination suit filed by eight fired black employees.
The longtime lottery workers were fired between January and August 2005. They filed individual complaints with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and together filed a federal lawsuit alleging civil rights violations.
The Indianapolis Business Journal and The Indianapolis Star obtained copies of the settlement through public records requests.
In the settlement, lottery officials admit no liability and contend the plaintiffs’ terminations were lawful. The settlement bars either side from commenting other than saying the case has been resolved to the satisfaction of both parties.
Lottery proceeds will pay for the settlement.
