10 scientific facts from the Bible

More by this author

The debate on science versus religion has raged throughout time with fundamentalist believers urging for their continued separateness.

However, a study conducted by sociologist Elaine Howard Ecklund of Rice University, revealed that nearly 50 percent of evangelicals believe that science and religion can work together and support one another.

The book 101 Scientific Facts & Foreknowledge by author Jim Tetlow attempts to solidify the connection by providing prophetic biblical examples of scientific phenomena, many of which were discovered years after the penning of said Scriptures. The book is a companion pamphlet to the award-winning DVD program ā€œA Question of Origins.ā€ Read on for 10 of the most interesting facts from the book.

Job 26:7 – The Earth free-floats in space affected only by gravity.

Hebrews 11:3 – Creation is made of particles, indiscernible to our eyes. Not until the 19th century was it discovered that all visible matter consists of invisible elements.

Genesis 6:15 – The Bible specifies the perfect dimensions for a stable water vessel. Ship builders today are well aware that the ideal dimension for ship stability is a length six times that of the width.

Jonah 2:5-6 – There are mountains on the bottom of the ocean floor. Only in the last century have we discovered that there are towering mountains and deep trenches in the depths of the sea.

Isaiah 40:22 – The Earth is a sphere.

Job 38:16 – Oceans contain springs. Almost all the ocean floor is in total darkness and the pressure there is enormous. It would have been impossible for Job to have explored the ā€œsprings of the sea.ā€ In the 1970s, with the help of deep diving research submarines that were constructed to withstand 6,000 pounds-per-square-inch pressure, oceanographers discovered springs on the ocean floors.

Genesis 2:7; 3:19 – Our bodies are made from the dust of the ground. Scientists have discovered that the human body is comprised of some 28 base and trace elements – all of which are found in the earth.

Genesis 2:1-2 – The First Law of Thermodynamics states that the total quantity of energy and matter in the universe is a constant. One form of energy or matter may be converted into another, but the total quantity always remains the same.

Genesis 1:1-3 – The first three verses of Genesis accurately express all known aspects of the creation. Science expresses the universe in terms of: time, space, matter and energy. Genesis chapter one reads; ā€œIn the beginning (time) God created the heavens (space) and the earth (matter)…Then God said, ā€œLet there be light (energy).ā€

Job 38:24 – Light can be divided. Sir Isaac Newton studied light and discovered that white light is made of seven colors, which can be ā€œpartedā€ and then recombined.
