“For to us a child is born, to us a son shall be given, and the government shall be upon his shoulder, And his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”
Isaiah 9:6
“Beloved, let us (unselfishly) love and seek the best for one another, for love is from God; and everyone who loves (others) is born of God and knows God (through personal experience)”. 1 John 4:7
Before the hustle and bustle of the season can begin,
Let’s reflect on the reason for the season again.
Before the shopping lists are done and gifts are given,
Let’s reflect on the greatest gift that’s ever been given.
Before the bills are created that will need to be paid,
Let’s reflect on the greatest gifting that was ever made.
Jesus … Yes, it’s still Jesus.
Actually the hustle and bustle of the season has already begun. It comes earlier and earlier each year. OK, I literally saw Christmas items set up in stores in September. It’s as if there is a reason to connect Christmas to everything, start this fall to get shopping done. We hear the Christmas carols, Christmas movies, holiday sales and reminders that it is the most wonderful time of the year. However you prepare for this season, I invite you to consider gift giving that you can start this season, but you can give all year long.
Jesus is the real reason for the season … and every season.
• Remember loved ones and friends who have a difficult time during this season, whether it is due to the changes in season or a holiday without a loved one. Be sensitive to the fact that this may not be the most wonderful time of the year for them. Give them the gift of your presence, check up on them and send notes or cards or texts. Reach out and invite them out for something. In addition to letting them know that we are here for them, I have learned that sometimes we need to reach out to others. They may appreciate that even more. Let them know you are here for them, in whatever way they need it.
Jesus … it’s still Jesus.
• Take the time to thank those who have encouraged you, especially within the last year, by reaching out to them. You would be surprised what a difference it makes when people know how much they are appreciated. Take the time to encourage someone who you have taught and nurtured.
Jesus … it’s still Jesus.
• Give the gift of your time, talent and treasure to organizations and agencies that focus on different outreach efforts during the season. Volunteer packing food baskets, delivering meals and donating to those who invest in the community. Look for ways to contribute and be a blessing with these groups all year long.
Jesus … it’s still Jesus.
• Think about the people who work for the above-mentioned groups. These are those community activists and advocates who work tirelessly for others, but need to be reminded of self care. Give them a gift card for a treat, encourage them and thank them for the work they do and the impact on the community. Being an advocate and activist for justice is a commitment and important work, give the gift of your appreciation and encouragement in tangible ways and don’t limit it to the season.
Jesus … it’s still Jesus.
• Birth out that book, business, vision, project that has been brewing inside of you. The world is waiting for what gifts have been placed inside of you. Giving the world the gift of your talents, passion and gifts is for every season.
Jesus … it’s still Jesus.
The reason for the season will always be,
The gift that you can never find under a tree.
The reason for the season will never be found,
In searching for the most expensive gift around.
The real reason for the season for all of us,
Is remembering the gift of Jesus.
We celebrate this gift of Jesus, in the best way,
When we live out Christ’s love, compassion and justice every single day.
Jesus is the reason … for every season, and I am grateful.
Blessed to be a blessing to you,
