Eat for the cure

Starting Oct. 5, participating Panera Bread locations will have a very special addition to the menu – the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Pink Ribbon bagel. They are inviting customers to come to their stores that day to fight against breast cancer. Panera has made a commitment to donate 100 percent of the proceeds from the Oct. 5 sale of Pink Ribbon bagels to Komen, which is devoted to ending breast cancer by empowering people, ensuring quality care and energizing science to find a cure. Panera will continue to sell the bread product for the remainder of October, and will donate 15 cents per bagel for the rest of the month.

Buddha relics

A collection of rare and sacred relics depicting Buddha and other important figures of Buddhism is coming to Indianapolis Sept. 24-26. They will be displayed in An Lac Temple, 5249 E. 30th St., from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sept 24, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sept. 25, and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sept. 26. This collection offers Indianapolis residents a rare opportunity to learn about another culture and religion and includes a life-size golden statue of Maitreya, who, according to Buddhist scriptures, will be the next Buddha to bring teachings of love, kindness and peace to the world.

There is no entrance charge to view the exhibit, but donations are welcome. Proceeds will go the Maitreya Project. Call (831) 588-6308 to learn more.

Freetown auditions

Auditions for the Freetown Village Children’s Ensemble will take place Sept. 28 starting at 5:30 p.m. at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church, 4601 N. Emerson Ave. This ensemble offers youth the opportunity to perform skits, songs, chants, dances, and spoken expressions highlighting African-American music and heritage. Performances will take place at churches, conferences, and festivals throughout Indianapolis from October through June. The auditions are open to children aged 8 to 12. Applicants should be prepared to sing without musical accompaniment or with a soundtrack and to respond to questions about themselves. Titanic exhibit

“Titanic, the Artifact Exhibition,” featuring real objects and real stories is coming to the Indiana State Museum for a run from Sept. 25 through Jan. 16, 2011. According to the museum, the galleries in the exhibition will feature more than 240 real artifacts recovered from the ocean floor along with room re-creations and personal stories of people who were on the ship when it sunk on its maiden voyage.

The museum is located in White River State Park at 650 W. Washington St.

Mother Knows Best

Local production company In Your Face Productions is set to showcase the original play Mother Knows Best at 6 p.m. Sept. 24 and 5 p.m. Sept. 25 at the Irving Theater, 5505 E. Washington St.

Sharon Johnson, first lady of Eastern Star Church, will perform the leading role in the show, which focuses on a woman fighting to improve her life after an abusive ex-husband leaves her and their 11-year-old child. Of special interest is that mayoral candidate Ron Gibson will be acting out campaign commercials on stage between scenes. Tickets are $30 for dinner and the show or $20 for the show only. Green hair line introduced

The Green Wonders product line recently introduced NaturalaXer, the first multi-ethnic hair relaxer that is organic, non-toxic and chemical free. This new hair product is being touted as an alternative to traditional hair straighteners used by African-American women that can lead to a burning scalp or hair loss. ‘Dreamgirls’

Tickets for the musical “Dreamgirls” are now on sale as part of a Broadway Across America Season Presentation. John Legend opens Butler lecture series

Grammy-winning musician, activist and philanthropist John Legend will open the 2010-2011 Celebration of Diversity Lecture Series at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 29 in Clowes Memorial Hall, 4602 Sunset Ave., with a talk and performance entitled “Saving American Education: A Message and Music from John Legend.”

Legend, an artist who touches lives in a way that extends beyond music, will engage the community in addressing the issues and problems that are destroying American public education. Tickets are $100, which include special seating and admission to a post-event reception with Legend; $50; and $25.
