Beware of business fraud
After receiving several complaints about abusive market practices, the United States Small Business Administration (SBA) has issued a warning about fraudulent firms offering access to SBA-provided funds. Apparently, certain firms have been running scams and charging exorbitant fees under the pretense of offering to help other businesses obtain loans, grants and other federal money from the SBA. There are several things that small businesses should know and do in regards to the SBA.
Small businesses can get free assistance by calling or visiting one of the SBAās 68 district offices or SBAās Web site, www.sba.gov. Location and contact information for legitimate help centers can be found on the site.
Always ask for references and consult business protection institutions like the Better Business Bureau when selecting service providers.
Always clearly establish and document what and when you are being charged and what services you will receive.
Never provide social security numbers, bank account information, or credit card numbers to anyone, especially over the telephone.
If a firm issues your business a āforfeiture letterā that would make you ineligible for any SBA funding if you refuse to use the firmās services, then it is likely a scam and you should report it to the SBAās inspector general at (800) 767-0385 or www.sba.gov/ig.
For more information, call (800) 827-5722 or visit SBAās Web site.
