Soul Sista is on the move

More by this author

If you are on the hunt for hot water cornbread, deep-fried crispy chicken or the creamy goodness of oven roasted mac and cheese, there are an abundance of soul food restaurants serving up Southern style comfort food within the city – including one on wheels.

What makes these meals on wheels speak to your soul has nothing to do with secret recipes, delicate mashed potatoes or the heart-clenching sweetness of homemade Yams – it lies within convenience. At any given moment, during the peak hours of lunch and after businesses have shut their doors for the day, you’ll spot the ocean blue food truck Soul Sista on The Move.

This isn’t your typical ā€œchoose your own tableā€ eatery because there aren’t any! Simply squeeze in line and prepare yourself to digest a piece of heaven while on the go, at your desk or in your home because the truck can be found all over the city. Customers can create a meal around pork chops or fried chicken and choose any two sides such as mac and cheese, greens, green beans and others that will have you craving for more.

I spotted Soul Sista while browsing the selection of food trucks at the First Friday Food Truck Festival. Not new to the food truck event, I’ve always discovered foods representing various cultural backgrounds such as Caribbean, Indian and Mexican foods and found it odd to see a soul food truck resting in the parking lot of Old National Centre.

I thought, ā€œNo way could this food be as tasty as my family’s cooking. There is no way they could fry up such delectable food in a small space.ā€ Boy was I wrong! I ordered the fried chicken meal with mac and cheese and collard greens.

As I waited for my food to be prepared, I noticed they even had a bottle of hot sauce on the counter, which I knew would add the icing on the cake to my meal. Not only was the food blazing with just-cooked smoke sweeping from my container, the items were just as tasty as those at an actual restaurant.

The three jumbo fried chicken wings were seasoned to perfection and contained just the right amount of crunch. The collard greens seemed to have a special Creole seasoning on them which was to die for and the mac and cheese was layered with a crisp top and a savory center.
