Cheap and delicious

More by this author

If you’re like me, sometimes the holiday season coaxes you into pulling out your checkbook more often. There’s end of the year philanthropic donations, countless parties, your growing gift lists for friends and family as well as that coveted Christmas item for yourself.

Even though you’re shelling out the dough more often than you’d like, it doesn’t mean you still can’t eat well. Here are a few affordable restaurants that will leave you and your wallet full.

Yats

Locations: College Ave, Mass Ave, and 96th St.

Head to one of Yats’ many locations for a taste of Cajun and Creole for an incredibly low price. What makes this eatery so awesome is its carefree, unpretentious atmosphere that focuses on feeding people good food. Papa Roux on the city’s Eastside also serves up a mean bowl of gumbo or shrimp etouffee.

Good Morning Mama’s

Location: 1001 E 54th St.

If you’ve got a house full of guests and don’t feel like cooking breakfast, take them to Good Morning Mama’s. It’s easy to go to a chain restaurant for breakfast, but none have the tastes, personality or local feel that this Broad Ripple restaurant has. They even serve a champagne mimosa. Biscuits, located near Broad Ripple High School, also serve a really good breakfast with a Mexican twist.

Jersey’s CafĆ©

13710 N. Meridian St.

I love a well-crafted sandwich. Jersey’s CafĆ© in Carmel is a small restaurant, but the food is full of big flavors. The restaurant was also featured on Food Network’s Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives show, which should put the stamp of approval on how delicious the food is. If you don’t want to drive all the way to Carmel for a sandwich, Grady’s Champion Deli, 4361 N Keystone Ave., has really good sandwiches as well. Recorder staffers eat there quite often!

His Place Eatery

3709 N. Shadeland Ave.

I love soul food, but sometimes down-home cooking can get pricey. What’s great about His Place Eatery is that you can get a delicious entrĆ©e for less than $10. That includes meat, two sides and a choice of bread. With a long list of sandwiches and desserts, you can’t go wrong here. Maxine’s Chicken and Waffles downtown also offers hearty meals at low prices.
