Mary Moss is known as one of the great jazz vocalists in Indiana history. Known as “The lady with the song,” her powerful voice could be heard almost daily at functions around town. Her smile often greeted you before she did.
Eight years ago Moss was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. She is currently in an adult foster home run by her former pastor at Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church, Dr. Thomas L. Brown. She sang in the choir and also served as Brown’s administrative assistant for 15 years at Martin University. With no living family members, when Moss was diagnosed she rearranged her will to make Brown her legal guardian.
“She’s still singing and dances when we have music on,” said Jacqueline Brown, administrator of the adult foster home. “She still recognizes her own CDs. She’s doing great.”
Thomas Brown has many of Moss’ possessions and is looking into having them archived.
