As a young boy, Randy Weston knew he was destined to be a musician. He’s written tracks for musicians such as Ludacris and Nappyville but couldn’t make sense of using his God given talent for anyone else but the Lord.
To form Judah Band, Weston assembled an outfit of Indianapolis talent who’s contended with struggles such as drugs, alcohol and promiscuity but wanted to use their lives to spiritually battle good versus evil.
“I look at us as a super hero team. There’s somebody in our group for everybody. Everyone in the group is handpicked for war,” said Weston.
Band members recognize their calling but want to use their craft to bring youth to Christ. Drummer Feldon “PJ” Majors recalls a time when he was ministering to a group of young men. He played some of the band’s music and all were surprised gospel music could sound so good. He and other members strive to “reach the unreachable.”
Judah Band may create heavenly sound, but they are first and foremost a family. As a group, they have early morning prayer three days a week.
Drawing from singers such as Prince and Fred Hammond, Weston states he creates Judah Band’s sound to be eclectic and friendly to the ears of today’s youth.
Their God inspired debut album is a testament to that. “Freshman Year” is a series of discs, the first being “First Semester.” The disc begins with “We Say Thankx,” an up tempo, pop inspired track acknowledging God’s glory. There’s also “God Roxx,” high energy rock dedicated to “the rock;” and “Bless His Name,” the catchy tune you can’t help but dance and sing along to.
Judah Band’s next disc, “Freshman Year: Mid Term” is due to release at the end of June. Their objective: give God the glory.
“The sound of the music is very youthful, but the substance can reach all ages. To the older crowd, the message is more attractive, but to the younger crowd, the method is attractive,” said Weston.
