Legion to pay for study of children’s home

More by this author

The American Legion will pay for a feasibility study of a state home for trouble children in hopes its results will convince officials to keep the facility open.

American Legion Commander Ralph Tolan announced the move Saturday in Indianapolis.

Tolan says the study will provide a professional recommendation for the future of the Indiana Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Children’s Home in Knightstown.

The State Department of Health wants to close the home, saying it costs too much money and that its 115 students should be moved into traditional schools in May.

But supporters say the facility about 25 miles east of Indianapolis gives at-risk youths a loving, safe environment where they can flourish.

The Legion hopes to keep the home open for another one to two years to complete its study.
