Between the bun

More by this author

The average American eats more than 100 hamburgers per year. If you’re going to eat that many burgers, make sure they are really good.

Here are a few of my favorite spots to get an amazing, freshly made hamburger.

BRU Burger Bar

410 Massachusetts Ave.

From the people that brought you other restaurants such as Mesh on Mass Ave and Charbonos, comes BRU Burger Bar, a restaurant devoted to the classic hamburger.

Creating a burger is not difficult, but since burgers and beer is their specialty, no short cuts have been taken when creating a custom menu. The folks at BRU have created a super flavorful, special-ground meat burger made from a blend of tri-tip sirloin, chuck and brisket.

Cheeses used are sans plastic wrap and are of high quality. They even pepper their own bacon. Some BRU burgers have ketchup, mustard and mayo, but BRU also makes their own aiolis, sauces and chutneys to add extra flavor.

The most ordered item is the BRU Burger made with Taleggio cheese, bacon, tomato jam, porter braised onion, chopped lettuce and mayo. Other delicious burgers include the Ground Turkey Burger; the Blazing Saddles; and the Provencal.

The most expensive food item on the menu is $11.

Scotty’s Lakehouse

10158 Brooks School Road, Fishers

Scotty’s Lakehouse doesn’t claim to be the first restaurant to source local products. But, when you combine that attitude with the attempt at every item on the menu, as well as, their entire draft and bottled beer list coming from Indiana farms and brewers, they are in fact unique.

In order for guests to taste freshness in every bite and know it is coming from the state of Indiana, the Lakehouse provides natural, organic, hormone-free, antibiotic-free, cage-free products.

These foodies at heart have created a menu that is a reflection of their passion. They’ve got 16 burgers on the list so the pressure’s on to choose one.

Try one with garlic teriyaki, spicy barbecue, Asian slaw and red onion or a bison burger with chunky bleu cheese dressing, mild sauce and topped with onion rings.

The Lakehouse even has turkey and veggie burgers. Any burger can be subbed for a chicken breast and they even have Udi’s gluten-free buns.

Their priciest burger is $13.50 but worth every penny.

Boogie Burger

1904 Broad Ripple Ave.

Boogie Burger, owned by a Broad Ripple and North Central graduate husband and wife team, is the product of Mark and Erin Radford’s travels. In short, they love burgers. They’ve had burgers all the way from Harlem to the Napa Valley and wanted to create a restaurant that reflected the burgers they’ve tried and loved during their travels.

Open wide for a Boogie Monster made with two 1/3-pound patties stacked with onion rings, pastrami, cheddar cheese, fried egg and bacon.

Boogie Burger has awesome hamburgers but they also serve four types of fries, onion rings, ice cream, milk shakes malts, floats and smoothies.

The best part about Boogie Burger is that you can get a large hamburger, fries and a drink for less than $10.
