Umoja Christian Church sends blessings near and far

Mark 16:15 reads, “go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.” Umoja Christian Church strives to make that Scripture a reality not just within the city of Indianapolis, but also beyond.

Established in March 2007, Umoja, which means unity is Swahili, believes in offering high praise to God that is not culturally limited. Since their church was established the congregation began mission trips outside of the United States.

“We try to help as many people as we can. That is what we do,” said Dr. Donald R. Hudson, pastor of the church. “The priority of the church is to feed them spiritually, but we cannot neglect the physical side. We don’t want them to come to church and then go home trying to figure out their next meal.”

Umoja has ministries in Africa, and is currently planning to become a sister church and partner with a church in Jamaica. According to Hudson, they’ve provided over 500 audio Bibles in The Republic of the Congo and Rawanda and established a health clinic also in the Congo. In Jamaica they’ve adopted an orphanage and visit once a year providing food, books, cleaning supplies, computer equipment and child care.

Church member and minister Lucretia Thompson is motivated by the mission Hudson implements. She testified that it gives her a sense of purpose.

“We see on TV what’s going on in other countries and think ‘gosh if only I can help.’ We actually do! This is what it’s really about,” Thompson said. “It’s fulfilling. It kills you to think those people climb mountains to come to church, and walk for miles with no shoes still praising God. To be apart of that is so rewarding that I can’t even explain it.”

Not only does Umoja reach out overseas, but Indianapolis also reaps from their outreach ministries. They feed hundreds of people monthly through the Saturday morning food pantry, and allow members and non-members to purchase vegetables and fruits at a low cost from their Fresh Harvest Food Ministry.

According to Hudson the affordable produce helps a tremendous number of families. He wants people to get gas and still be able to provide food for the family. They can save money and be healthy, he said.

“If we are not reaching people physically then it deflates what we say about Christ. We are followers of Christ,” Hudson said. “He didn’t just talk about the kingdom of God he helped them live.”
