Every day, someone grieves the loss of a loved one to homicide. On Friday, Sept. 25, people in communities throughout the country will gather in parks, churches and other venues for the National Day of Remembrance for Murder Victims. This is a special time to remember family members, friends and neighbors who lost their lives to homicide this past year.
A memorial service will be held in Indianapolis on Sept. 25 at 6:30 p.m. at Brookside Community Church, 1035 N. Olney St. It will include a candle lighting ceremony and a reading of the names, remembering those who were victims of homicide in Indianapolis during the past 12 months.
The service is sponsored by The Church Federation of Greater Indianapolis, Victim Assistance Unit of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, Survivors of Violent Death Support Group, and Legacy House.
“This special time of remembrance offers us the opportunity to come together as a community to not only honor the men, women and children taken from us, but to support family and friends they left behind,” said Michael Hurst, executive director of Legacy House.
“It is important that we publicly recognize the homicides in our community and the ongoing effect they have on all of us,” said Stephanie Rader, board member with Legacy House and the mother of a homicide victim. “It’s only when we come together for a service like this that we can heal as a community, and each of us who lost someone can take comfort from that process.“
