Warm up at Nick’s Chili Parlor

Like it or not, we’re in the midst of winter and its daily possibilities for harsh weather.

However, winter is the perfect time to get a warm and soothing lunch or dinner from Nick’s Chili Parlor located at 2621 Lafayette Road.

Since the last time I visited, the restaurant has undergone several changes to become more hospitable for guests, including seating that is more comfortable and spacious, and restrooms that are inside the building instead of behind it.

Established by Nick Ferris in 1974, Nick’s is known for its “Not Yet World Famous” chili, which is arguably the best this side of the Ohio River. The restaurant has won many awards for its chili and chili dogs, and Ferris was inducted into the Restaurant & Hospitality Association of Indiana’s Hall of Fame in 2001.

“We pride ourselves on good, friendly and quick customer service, as well as items that are good for any occasion, whether you’re organizing a corporate party or just trying to have a relaxing meal during the weekend,” said Farris.

Ferris first worked in the wholesale grocery business with his father, before they opened their first chili parlor after realizing that no restaurants in Indianapolis (during the 1970s) specialized in chili. Ferris formulated his own recipe, which keeps many original customers coming back decade after decade.

Of course, customers can enjoy chili basically any way they want it: with or without beans, with or without cheese, with noodles, etc. You can also get chili on cheeseburgers, hot dogs and French fries.

Those who have an adventurous spirit however, can try the chili 5-way, which is a bowl of spaghetti and tasty red beans, covered with chili, smothered with cheddar cheese and topped with fresh onions.

A customer doesn’t have to get chili however, as other items are available to them such as a grilled polish sausage or chicken breast sandwich, onion rings, salad, cole slaw, a “bun buster” pork sandwich, hot peppers or potato salad. Drinks include, Sprite, Coke, Diet Coke, lemonade, fresh iced tea, milk or bottled water.

For dessert, patrons have the option of chocolate chip cookies, chocolate cake, carrot cake and apple, pecan, lemon meringue or sweet potato pie.

When one has entered the restaurant several times, they’ll discover that most members of the staff are friendly, efficient and able to get even some of the biggest, most complicated orders correct.

This is probably because Ferris’ employees, some of whom have been with him over 15 years, enjoy their work environment. Ferris said his management secret is to “operate a human resource department that sells food.” During some mornings and early afternoons, Ferris can be found working behind the counter, side by side with his employees.

Nick’s has a very calm, relaxing atmosphere and is a wonderful place to take the family or a date without emptying your bank account: All items on the menu are between 99 cents (for coffee) to $5.49 for a half pound breaded pork tenderloin sandwich.
