Elizabeth Robinson, who was one of the first female patrol officers in the nation, has died at the age of 66.
The Indianapolis Police Department said Robinson died Wednesday at Indiana University Hospital of kidney failure.
Robinson worked for the IPD for 22 years. She was hired in 1967. After a year of working mostly secretarial jobs, she and partner Betty Blankenship persuaded the chief to allow them to become patrol officers.
Robinson’s husband, 20-year IPD veteran Donald R. Goeden, said older men were resistant to Robinson’s appointment. She was required to carry her gun in her purse and wear high heels and a skirt.
