Reimagining what’s possible for our Indianapolis students

We all know the saying, “It takes a village to raise a child.” As a former school-based clinician within the Indianapolis Public Schools system, I endeavor to equip students with the tools and skills they require to be successful, both in and out of the classroom. As an Indianapolis native and a proud product of the immersion program within Lawrence Township Schools, I witnessed the power of education firsthand. I completed my first bachelor’s degree by my sophomore year and earned a second degree, all while competing as an NCAA Division I multi-sport athlete.

Education is a personal priority, but my mission continues to be breaking barriers and empowering communities. The same opportunities I had should be open and accessible to every student, especially those from underrepresented populations.

I had a village that inspired me as I was growing up—my parents, my family and my coaches made it feel as though I had a full community of people who were invested in my success. Through trials and hardships, they made it so the only option I had was to succeed. I pour back into our youth so that our kids can experience a village of their own in their journey toward success.

Being a part of the collective means that we show up for the youth and do our part to break down barriers. It means we vote for policies that protect our children, advocate for initiatives that bring more resources into the classroom and collaborate with elected officials who support the success of all children. Everyone, no matter who you are, can do something. Together, we can ensure all schools have resources for students to thrive.

It takes all of us to keep education at the top of mind. We need leaders who understand that it takes a village and are willing to help build one through positive change in our community.

Let’s work together as a community to rethink what education in Indianapolis can be.
