The YMCA of Greater Indianapolis will consolidate its east side services and early learning programming, including the permanent closure of the Ransburg YMCA effective March 31.

The decision, announced on Jan. 20 by the YMCA Association Board of Directors, was described as a necessary step to ensure the long-term sustainability of the organization’s services across central Indiana.

The closure concludes an 18-month effort to address persistent financial challenges at the Ransburg center. YMCA leadership stated that all potential options for maintaining the facility had been exhausted.

“This decision was not made lightly,” President and CEO of the YMCA of Greater Indianapolis Gregg Hiland said. “Our staff, volunteers and community members worked tirelessly the past 18 months to address ongoing financial pressures at the Ransburg center. We explored every option but found no viable solutions for sustainability for this location. While this outcome is painful, it was made to preserve our mission and our ability to serve the central Indiana community for years to come.”

The organization will assist current Ransburg members in transitioning to other nearby facilities, noting that several YMCA centers serve overlapping areas of the east side. In many cases, alternative locations may be closer to where members reside.

In a related consolidation, the YMCA will also suspend early learning programs at the Baxter, Benjamin Harrison and Ransburg centers. This action is attributed to external funding changes that created unsustainable financial pressure on these specific programs.

“The YMCA remains deeply committed to its members and the greater Indianapolis community,” YMCA Association Board Chair Joe White said. “We will work alongside community leaders to identify the best options for everyone who depends on the YMCA.”
