Co-host CeCe Winans encourages all to attend and ‘look to be blessed’

Fans of CeCe Winans know that when the gospel sensation hits the stage, she puts on a show. A show that will have people lifting their hands, stomping their feet, singing along and even crying.

Winans will bring that show to Indianapolis for the Super Bowl Gospel Celebration taking place Friday, Feb. 3 at 7:30 p.m. at Clowes Memorial Hall at Butler University.

She will co-host the event with actor/comedian Wayne Brady as well as perform alongside other gospel greats including Donnie McClurkin and Hezekiah Walker. American Idol winner Fantasia will also perform at the celebration.

Winans, a winner of numerous Grammy and Stellar Awards, talked with the Recorder about the Super Bowl Gospel Celebration and how she is most looking forward to see perform.

Recorder: You’ve attended and performed at several Super Bowl Gospel Celebrations, what do you like most about the event?

CeCe Winans: I love the NFL Choir. To see that the NFL formed a choir is amazing to me. They really do a good job and they are so serious about it. I would say that is always the highlight every year.

Speaking of the NFL Choir, a lot of football players I’ve spoken with recently talked a lot about how important their faith is, personally and professionally. Why do you think it is necessary to have a gospel event not only coincide with the game but also be a sanctioned NFL event?

I think it’s a blessing to the players because they do have strong faith in God and this gives them an opportunity to display that faith.

I think because so many of our children look up to these athletes it’s really important for them to see famous people who they admire deal with life’s ups and downs; to see how important their faith is to them. I think it will encourage young people to get grounded in God and have some type of foundation they can stand on because no matter who you are, you go through rough times.

It’s interesting you say that because the Gospel Celebration isn’t only about singing. Players also get the opportunity to share personal testimonies that are sure to encourage everyone.

It’s awesome. You see the players in a totally different light. The last thing they’re thinking about is football. They’re just giving God praise for bringing them through their different situations. They’re not ashamed.

You see these big guys excited to put on their choir robe, lifting their hands and proclaiming the name of Christ. It’s so powerful.

A lot of times the news likes to focus on the negative things but you really have some great men of God who are taking a stand and living the life.

As an artist, where so many times you’re the one on stage encouraging people with your voice, what is it like for you to be part of the audience?

I enjoy it. We have a blast. Donnie, Hezekiah and Wess (Morgan) are all brothers of mine, and fellow industry mates of mine. It’s a relaxed atmosphere; there is a lot of laughing and a lot of celebration. We just happen to be at the Super Bowl.

For people who haven’t had the opportunity to witness the Super Bowl Gospel Celebration, why should they attend?

Indianapolis should definitely be in the house! It’s an outing for the entire family to enjoy. If you love sports it’s also a good time because you’ll be able to see your favorite players in a totally different light. You’re also going to enjoy the gospel. Gospel music is all about good news, answers and celebration. We just have a really great time. Everyone should come and look to be blessed.
