Remembering Dorothy Davis

Dorothy Nora (Brooks) Davis, 85, of Indianapolis, passed away Sept. 5, 2012. She was born Oct. 15, 1926 to Nora E. (Bailey) Brooks and Harry W. Brooks Sr., and is the mother to the Rev. Dr. Charles R. Williams, longtime president of Indiana Black Expo Inc.

Davis graduated from Crispus Attucks in 1944 and continued her education at Butler and Martin Universities. She was employed by the Army Finance Center, worked as a secretary for Second Christian Church, and Witherspoon Presbyterian Church and owned Executive Secretarial Services.

Visitation for Davis will be Sept. 13 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. with an Ivy Beyond The Wall service at 7:30 p.m. Visitation and funeral services will continue Sept. 14 beginning at 10 a.m. at Witherspoon Presbyterian Church, 5136 N. Michigan Road.

Dorothy was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., a lifelong member of the NAACP, and served as an active member of The Indianapolis Urban League where she was president of the Women’s Guild.

She is survived by her daughter, Kathryn A. (Davis) Jordan, foster son Wade Anderson (Linda); grandchildren Robert Scott (Tasha), Maisha Williams Perkins (Walter), Raymone Beamon Wllliams, Evan R. Freeman, Charles R. Williams II, Andrea Williams, and Shakara Williams; siblings Major General (Ret.) Harry W. Brooks Jr., Betty L. Shaw, and James Brooks (Pat); and a host of great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces, cousins and mentees.

She is preceded in death by her son, Rev. Dr. Williams; parents, Nora E. (Bailey) Brooks and Harry W. Brooks Sr.; sister, Carolyn Sue (Brooks) Anderson Sherrell; niece, Caroline Florian; nephews, Marvin Crutcher, Larry Brooks and Wayne Brooks; and great-granddaughter, Layonna Scott.

Memorials may be sent to Witherspoon Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund and the Rev. Charles R. Williams Prostate Cancer Mobile Unit (Marion County Health Dept).
