State health officials are urging Indiana residents to get their flu vaccinations, saying it prevents many from becoming ill.

Influenza, or the “flu,” is a viral infection of the respiratory tract. It is spread by respiratory droplets from infected people or contact with contaminated surfaces or objects.
Flu season occurs annually, typically starting around October and continuing through May. The health department says seasonal flu viruses can vary from year to year, so it is important to get a flu vaccine every year.
High-risk individuals include pregnant women, young children, those with chronic illnesses and/or compromised immune systems and adults age 65 and older.
