Bashiri Asad at The Jazz Kitchen

Join soul man Bashiri Asad and his always groovin’ band as they release his latest musical endeavor, an album titled “A Girl Named Charlie.” The event takes place on Friday, Sept. 1, at 5 p.m. Tickets start at $20 and can be purchased at thejazzkitchen.com.

Farmers market

The Eskenazi Health Farmers Market provides fresh and local produce, fresh baked goods, plants and other market items to the public. In addition, this year’s market will feature a variety of live music performances and provide resources and techniques to help reduce stress and improve mood. Visit the market each Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. through Sept. 19 in front of Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital, located at 720 Eskenazi Ave. More information is available at eskenazihealth.edu.

 

Summer movie series: ‘Jurassic Park’

Summertime means warm nights, cold drinks and good company. Get cozy on the lawn on Thursday, Aug. 31, for Hotel Broad Ripple’s Summer Movie Series. This free, all-ages screening of “Jurassic Park” starts at 9 p.m. at 6520 E. Westfield Blvd. Learn more at hotelbroadripple.com.

 

Tea’s The Artist youth series

Sip that tea and spit that poetry! Tea’s Me Café is looking for youth ages 4–19 who are poets, magicians, painters, entrepreneurs, comedians, singers, musicians and more to feature at this event. The Tea’s The Artist series is held on the first Friday of every month from 6-9 p.m. and gives youth the opportunity to perform before a live audience. Free dance party 

Dance the night away at the Back To The Future dance party with DJ MetroGnome, DJ Limelight, DJ Dezzy Dez and DJ Stylistic. The party takes place at the HI-FI on Friday, Sept. 1, at 11 p.m. Admission is free until midnight and $5 thereafter. 

 

Rahsaan Barber at the Jazz Kitchen

When you think of Nashville, jazz probably doesn’t come to mind any more than bluegrass does when you think of Detroit. If rising saxophonist Rahsaan Barber has his way, a change is coming to the traditional image of Music City. Rahsaan Barber & Everyday Magic will be performing at The Jazz Kitchen on Saturday, Sept. 2, at 7:30 p.m. Call the Jazz Kitchen at (317) 253-4900 for more information. 

 

Black art on display 

Visit the Central Library and view an exhibit featuring visual art by a group of local artists known as “We Are.” The exhibit serves as a platform for pride, diligence and self-respect. It can be viewed during regular business hours in the South Display Hall and Simon Room.
