Ralph Adams Lifetime Achievement Award
Join trumpeters Jim Edison and Clifford Ratliff along with drummer Mad Harold Cardwell, saxophonist Bill Penick and pianist Marvin Chandler as they receive the 2010 Ralph Adams Lifetime Achievement Award.
The presentation will be Oct. 17 at the Jazz Kitchen. It is being suggested that people get there early for a pre-show panel discussion with this year’s recipients. Last year’s awards presentation was standing room only.
The panel discussion begins at 4:30 p.m. Clifford Ratliff and the Indy Jazz Company will perform from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., the awards ceremony begins at 7:30, and the Derrick Gardner Quartet will finish off the night beginning at 8 p.m.
Joining Ratliff will be Hank Hankerson, Billy Meyers, Greg Artry and organ/piano great Melvin Rhyne. Joining Gardner will be Steve Allee, Frank Smith and Kenny Phelps.

Dessert shop grand opening
To celebrate its grand opening, Martha’s Special Desserts & Tierney’s Catering is having a ribbon cutting ceremony from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 15. Hors d’oevres will be served at the new location, 10834 E. U.S. highway 36. The ceremony will be followed by an open house from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., and a grand opening will take place the following day, Oct. 16 from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. This Black-owned-enterprise aims to serve top quality desserts and will accept catering orders seven days a week. Lockerbie haunting
The Earth House Collective will host “Earth House: Haunted?”, a tour and performance art piece from Oct. 26 to 28. The event will explore the “not-so-recent haunting of the historic Lockerbie Central building,” located at 237 N. East St.
Several arts and community groups will participate from 7 to 10 p.m. nightly. Tickets are $6 in advance or $8 at the door.
