A word of encouragement to Black fathers

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths.” Proverbs 3:5–6 (ESV)

There is something sacred about the role of a father.

And for Black fathers, this sacredness carries a special weight and a unique glory. I write this word of encouragement not just as a pastor, mentor and community leader — but as a Black man who grew up fatherless and now stands victorious in the role I once longed to see modeled.

Black fathers, you matter more than you know. You are vital, not only to your families, but to the strength and survival of our communities. Your presence, your words, your love and your discipline are divine instruments shaping the lives of our children physically, mentally and spiritually.

Despite what society often portrays, here’s the real truth: Black fatherhood is alive, active and making a difference.

According to a CDC report, Black fathers are more likely than white or Hispanic fathers to bathe, dress, read to and help their children with homework daily. Locally, we see this truth reflected in fatherhood initiatives like The Black Male Initiative, mentorship programs like Evolve International, and a renewed passion among Black men in Indianapolis and across the nation who are breaking generational cycles and choosing to show up.

Proverbs 3:5–6 offers us a spiritual roadmap. When we as fathers trust in the Lord and lean into God’s wisdom — not just our own experience or pain — we invite God to direct our paths. And if ever we needed divine direction, it’s now. Our sons, who are dying young from gun violence or being imprisoned disproportionally, need fathers who model integrity and self-discipline. Our daughters need fathers who affirm their worth and set the standard for how they should be loved, thus helping them avoid unnecessary cycles of abuse and intimate partner violence.

Let me say this clearly: To every Black father who is present, providing, protecting and praying — well done.Your labor is not in vain. You are seen. You are necessary. You are making a difference every single day.

Here are a few practical ways to stay aligned, encouraged and effective in your fatherhood journey:

  1. Trust God daily: Begin each day acknowledging God’s wisdom over your own. Pray for your children. Ask God for discernment in how to lead them in their uniqueness. Your consistency in prayer models spiritual strength.
  2. Be present, not just a provider: While providing is vital, presence is transformational. Quality time — listening, talking, laughing — builds bonds that money can’t buy. Be there emotionally, mentally and spiritually.
  3. Model wholeness: Healing is not weakness— it’s wisdom. Seek support for your mental health. Let your children see you model healthy habits, boundaries and emotional expression. Engage in the local Men and Mental Health Movement sessions which meets monthly in local congregations around the city and help black men addresses issues to include depression, anxiety, trauma (personal, racial and re-entry), anger.

Indianapolis, let’s continue to celebrate and support our Black fathers. Let’s highlight them in our churches, lift them in our prayers, and encourage them in our communities.

To every father striving to do right, even without a blueprint — you are proof that cycles can be broken, and new legacies built. Keep walking. Keep loving. Keep trusting. And remember: God will make your path straight.
