The holiday season is in full groove, and before you can say “Christmas spirit” it’ll all be over. While you still can, get involved in the holiday season. Go check out what Indianapolis has to offer, from the enchanting plays to the delightful musicals. Oh, and are you still searching for a last minute gift? Here are some quirky, charming local shops for you to explore.

The Indianapolis Museum of Art (IMA) will celebrate many exciting holiday events, including Christmas at Lilly House through Jan 6. The event invites guests into the former home of the J.K. Lilly Jr. family. The home is decked out with ribbons, wreaths, garlands and other fine holiday decorations reminiscent of the 1930s and ‘40s.

IMA visitors can marvel at the longest night of the year at the Winter Solstice gathering Dec. 20 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Be sure to dress warmly as the chilly night includes ice carving, holiday drinks, art making, bonfires and stargazing for all to enjoy. Visit Celebration Crossing at the Indiana State Museum (ISM) now through Dec. 31 for family fun.

Have a wonderful Christmas time at Jolly Days Winter Wonderland now through Jan. 6 at The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis. Take a ride down the yule-slide and discover the ice castle and fishing holes. Santa will make appearances throughout the season.

Grab some hot chocolate and join the fun at the Indianapolis Zoo’s annual Christmas at the Zoo presented by Donatos and Teachers Credit Union now to Dec. 30 (closed on Christmas Eve and Day). The zoo opens at noon and offers holiday-themed activities from 5 to 10 p.m. Special dolphin shows and keepers chat put a wild spin on the most wonderful time of the year. Decorate cookies, write letters to Santa, listen to carolers and warm up by the campfire. Santa will make appearances during the season. Enjoy Christmas now through Dec. 22 and Dec. 27 at Peewinkle’s Puppet Studio. This music-filled production will thrill the whole family. Mozart and Ludmilla, ritzy rodents who live in the piano, host a variety of holiday characters: rag dolls, Frosty, Rufus the Magic Elf, a live ballerina and more.
