New website helps Black consumers save money

It is interesting to note that when you view the great majority of websites that target African-Americans, they focus on four top categories: news, fashion, entertainment and celebrity gossip.

If entrepreneur Cheryl Munson has her way, that’s about to change.

“We African-Americans represent a huge market. We spend upwards of a trillion dollars annually. But where’s the Suze Orman or Clark Howard for us?” Munson asks. “We need an online resource to help us make smart purchasing decisions with our hard-earned dollars. Now more than ever.”

The BestBlackBuys.com website weds consumer information with lifestyle content. Unlike sites that solely focus on coupons and deals, BestBlackBuys.com incorporates related articles, useful shopping and consumer tips, along with advice and solutions for everyday life challenges. The site features more than 16 page categories, with articles that focus on important topics for African-Americans, ranging from health to home, education to entertainment, finances to legal affairs, books to beauty and more.

For example, on the “Our Homes” page of the website an article focuses on ways to cut utility and energy bills down-to-size. On the “Auto” page, content focuses on ways to keep an older car in tip-top shape. On the “Our Health” page, website visitors find information on how diabetes can lead to additional health risks, such as cardiovascular disease – the No. 1 killer of African-Americans, and preventive steps to take. There are also “how to” articles on home repairs and improvements to help save money.

Future plans include the introduction of an “Ask the Experts” page, where African-American experts from a broad range of categories will provide website visitors with answers to questions, tips and advice on everything from money matters to education, jobs and entrepreneurship, to health, love and faith.
