Edna Martin Center graduates vocational class

Several proud Indianapolis residents recently made history as the Edna Martin Christian Center’s (EMCC) first graduating class.

The EMCC is a new Indiana Department of Workforce Development vocational/trade training provider offering courses that yield nationally recognized certifications and provides job placement assistance upon completion.

“The program was a life-changing experience for me. It was an opportunity to grow and learn something new,” said Jesse Taylor, one of those who graduated earlier this month at the center’s location, 2605 E. 25th Street.

The vocational training is part of the workforce and community economic development efforts of the organization. Currently the organization offers certification in Welding Tech, Logistics and Culinary and Hospitality.

Respective credentials earned included: ServSafe Food Handler Certification, Certified Food Protection Manager Certification, Manufacturing Skills Standard Council Logistics Associate (CLA) and the American Welding Society Certificate.

“The Edna Martin Christian Center is dedicated to helping residents reach their potential through education and employment opportunities. Occupational training and certification is one way to address the skills/wage gap and move families to stability,” said Tysha Hardy-Sellers, executive director of the center.

“Along with the board, I set the vision and provide the resources needed for the organization to ensure that we meet the needs of residents and provide opportunities for growth for the community as a whole,” said Hardy-Sellers.

“As a faith-based neighborhood center, we are about action. We want people to experience positive change in their lives and then use that experience to help others. We are here as a connector to help people get to where they want to go personally and professionally.”

Enrollment for 2015 classes is underway.
