When you think of the thunderous sounds of motorsports at the storied Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Indy Cars and stock cars generally come to mind. All of that changed some seven years ago with the invasion of Moto GP motorcycle racing, and as the baddest riders on the planet once again converge at 16th and Georgetown this weekend, there is no shortage of storylines.

Without question the biggest conversation stems from the remarkable performance of Marc Marquez who to this point has been picture perfect in the Moto GP class for Respol Honda, winning every race of the season. In the process he’s surmounted a 77-point lead over teammate Dani Pedrosa. The legendary Valentino Rossi, winner of the inaugural Moto GP event at IMS in 2007, sits in third place and joins the balance of those who will line up on the grid wondering how to stop the juggernaut Marquez has become.

A newly reconfigured track featuring changes in several different turns should provide opportunities for better braking and more passing providing some new challenges to the riders. The course, which is just over 2.5 miles, also has a newly paved infield section which demonstrates the commitment in the off season IMS has made to provide a platform for even better competition.

Notes: American rider Nicky Hayden will miss the event as a result of wrist surgery. The perennial fan favorite will be replaced by Leon Carrier.

This year marks the end of a brilliant career for Colin Edwards who will retire after the season. The ā€œTexas Tornadoā€ will be sorely missed in the paddocks around the globe.

While the Moto GP class is the ultimate level of motorcycle racing, you can also enjoy the Moto 2 and Moto 3 action as well. Esteve Rabat currently sits atop of the Moto 2 standings while Jack Miller arrives in Indy as the Moto 3 points leader.

Practice for all events begins Aug. 8, with qualifications commencing the following day. Aug. 10 is when the green light will shine on the greatest riders in the world. Tickets are still available at the IMS box office or online at Indianapolismotorspeedway.com. All children under 12 enter the grounds free when accompanied by an adult. Reserved parking is also available.
