I always get this spontaneous craving for authentic Mexican food at the most random times. Last week I had one of those moments, so off I went to the Riviera Maya Mexican Restaurant.
This place has been dubbed the best Mexican food restaurant in Fishers, and I wanted to see what all the hype was about. Let’s start with the décor, because it’s quite interesting. There is definitely an ancient history feel at Riviera Maya.
The eatery has dim lighting, and huge tables and chairs which appeared hand carved. The name of the restaurant was carved into the tables and chairs. If you glance around you’ll notice that some tables and chairs were different too. Towards the back of the Riviera Maya there appears to be an entry way to a home protruding out the wall. It was a neat sight. There were also pillars, stoned walls, idols and colorful tiles all over the eatery. Definitely giving you that stepping into another culture vibe.
The menu is huge and it took me awhile to settle on my dinner choice. Good thing there was plenty of salsa and tortilla chips to keep me from starving. I appreciate that Riviera Maya provided pictures of the food on the menu next to the definition. If you are like me at unfamiliar restaurants you play the 25-question game with the waiter asking, “what is this or that?” Nope, not at Riviera!
I finally choose the arroz con pollo for my meal. It included seasoned grilled chicken breast strips covered with cheese sauce; served with Mexican rice accompanied with soft tortilla shells. The food came fairly quick and hot, just like I like it. It was a sight to see as well. It was a huge portion and looked flavorsome.
The chicken was moist and prepared just right, and the cheese was literally icing on the cake. The cheese was the “bam pow” to the meal. To top it off the rice, which I could have with every meal, was sensational. I was proud of my selection. The meal cost me $12.86 with a drink included.
This is definitely a place worth telling your friends to check out. Other than the service, which was not up to par, I highly recommend it. I will certainly give it another try.
