Autism: It’s Time to Listen

Autism is the fastest growing developmental disability in the United States. It is more common in children than cancer, diabetes, Down syndrome, and AIDS combined. Studies show there are clear racial disparities in health care and special education between African-American and Hispanic children with autism and Caucasian children with autism.Ā  When it comes to the diagnosis and treatment of autism, several studies found some real roadblocks for minorities. Come participate in a panel discussion and learn more about autism, the diagnosis, resources and your rights.

Part 1-Film Showing: ā€œColored My Mind: The Diagnosisā€

In this powerful short docu-feature, four mom warriors, including actress Tisha Campbell-Martin, are our guides as we explore the overlooked world of autism, in particular in the Black and Brown communities. Through these ladies, we uncover the truths about why some Black and Brown children are not receiving the same medical diagnosis or are being misdiagnosed. And through their stories, the narratives explore sadness, strength, joy and the ultimate hope that binds us all to fight for a better tomorrow.

Time: 2 pm

Cost: Included in exhibition admission

Location: Indiana Convention Center

Part 2- Panel Discussion
