Access to health insurance focus of Enroll Indiana Week

Hoosiers without health insurance will be the focus of several activities planned during Enroll Indiana Week, April 9-13. Organized by Covering Kids and Families, Enroll Indiana Week is a yearly event dedicated to raising public awareness of Americans without health care coverage and urges leaders to make covering the uninsured a top priority.

Activities planned for the week bring together diverse groups from around the community to demonstrate widespread support for Americans living without health coverage.

“At these events, and everyday throughout the year, Covering Kids and Families is available to assist with enrollment into health insurance programs and advocate for the uninsured,” said Pam Humes, program director of Covering Kids and Families of Central Indiana.

Events planned in Indianapolis for Enroll Indiana Week, April 9-13:

Women’s Health Day – April 9, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

IU Women on Wheels offers health screenings at the Marion County Public Health Department, 3838 N. Rural St.

Town Hall Meeting – April 9, 6-8 p.m.

Warren Performing Arts Center, 9500 E. 16th St.

Community leaders gather for a discussion on the Affordable Care Act and its impact on health care and education. Refreshments will be served.

Dr. Leonardo Ortega – Exec. Director/CEO, Shalom Health Care Center, Inc.

Robin Shackleford – State Representative, House District 98

John Dickerson – Exec. Director, The Arc of Indiana

Mariama Shaheed-Carson – Principal, MSD Pike Township

Diane Baker – Exec. Director, Family Development Services

Men’s Health Day – April 11, 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.

Indiana Statehouse

2013 Indiana Black Barbershop Health Initiative will offer free health screenings, including prostate.

B.A.B.E. Store Diaper Drive – April 12, 7-10 a.m.

Covering Kids & Families will collect diapers to donate to the B.A.B.E. store. Donations should be brought to the lobby of the Marion Co. Public Health Department, 3838 N. Rural St.

Family Day – April 13, 10 a.m.-1 p.m.

MDwise, Anthem and MHS partner to educate the community about the services they offer. The resource fair will take place at the Chase Near Eastside Legacy Center, 727 N. Oriental St.

Enroll Indiana Week is sponsored by Covering Kids and Families of Central Indiana, Health & Hospital Corporation of Marion County, the Marion County Public Health Department, Anthem, MDwise, IndyGo, Affecting Cancer Together, Managed Health Services (MHS), IU National Center of Excellence in Women’s Health, and the Warren Performing Arts Center.
