“For it is in giving that we receive.” Francis of Assisi

It is easy to take shots at today’s professional athletes, especially when they give us more than good reason to do so. I still contend there are a great number of them who appreciate how lucky they are, and recognize the importance of impacting the life of another who is in need of such without fanfare.

That would be the best way to describe Lavoy Allen of the Indiana Pacers, as he recently visited the Wheeler-Dowe Boys and Girls Club to host a pizza party for over 80 children and distribute 100 turkeys just in time for the holiday.

“Thanksgiving is always a big event for my family,” commented the soft-spoken Allen as he interacted with children. “It is a privilege to play in the NBA, and I truly understand how fortunate I am.”

The third year pro was quick to note that his family life growing up continues to influence the decisions he makes off the basketball court, and that he cherishes the holiday memories his upbringing instilled.

“I come from a big family,” Allen said, as he smiled and signed pictures. “My mother is the best cook in the world.”

Clearly, Allen gets it, and you can see it in the gentle way he posed for pictures and shot baskets with the young people in attendance.

“Young children mean a lot to me, and I remember how I looked up to people when I was in elementary school. They need to know someone cares.”

Notes: While his endeavors off the floor speak for themselves, Allen has raised his production for the Pacers by virtue of receiving more playing time.

Through the development of an accurate mid-range jump shot, he is averaging over seven points a game. His rebounding has been impressive too, as he is grabbing nearly eight boards a contest.

Allen clearly can play at the NBA level and is making Larry Bird look smart for re-signing him.

You can catch Lavoy Allen and his teammates as they take on the Orlando Magic Nov. 29 at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

The game will tip off at 8 p.m. to allow those in attendance time to watch the lighting of the “Worlds Largest Christmas Tree” on Monument Circle before the game.

Tickets are available at Pacers.com/tickets or by calling the Bankers Life Fieldhouse box office at (317) 917-2827.

Danny Bridges, who thinks Lavoy Allen is a lot more than just a basketball player, can be reached at (317) 578-1780 or at Bridgeshd@aol.com.
