A Portage seventh-grader has won Indiana’s annual Geographic Bee and will represent the state next month in the national competition in Washington, D.C.
Ian Markham, a student at Nativity of Our Savior School in Portage, beat out about 100 other fourth- to eighth-graders in the contest finals Friday at IUPUI. In the final round, he identified the Crimean War as sharing its name with a Ukrainian peninsula.
Brandon Jones, an eighth-grader at Guion Creek Middle School in Indianapolis, was second; Benjamin Coomer, a seventh-grader at Immanuel Lutheran in Seymour, placed third.
The top prize in the May 19-20 national contest sponsored by the National Geographic Society is a $25,000 college scholarship.
