Step outside of your traditional American dish and go international. The first time my mother ordered a gyro for me, I was very hesitant. It wasn’t the familiar fries, burgers and chicken tenders I had been accustomed to when eating at a restaurant.
As my taste buds explored the flavors of ethnic foods, I’ve made a special place in my heart for Greek traditions.
On the Northside of Indy just after 96th street on College Avenue is where I discovered Adel’s Gyros. In my hometown of Cleveland I adored a small and local restaurant that specialized in gyros and I was hoping this restaurant would live up to my expectations. The menu is splashed with appetizers, sandwiches and full meals big enough to satisfy your cravings. Of course, I settled on a regular gyro topped with lettuce and chopped tomatoes.
As I waited for my dish to be prepared, the cook and I chatted for a while and he introduced me to a few other items on the menu. If you think Adel’s Gyros only sells gyros then think again! The menu is packed with items such as shrimp curry with white rice, tilapia grilled or fried to your liking, full-sized Greek salads, Greek pork chops and shish kabobs prepared with chicken, pork, beef or lamb.
I began to wonder if I ordered the wrong item and wished I’d ordered the chicken curry dish but that will be on my to-do list for the next visit. The inside of the restaurant is filled with tables and chairs but don’t expect your traditional restaurant setup or a hostess to greet you, that’s what Adel is for,the cook. As I bit into my meal I was reminded of my local hometown traditions. Served with warm pita bread, my gyro was more than what I could ask for (literally). For $7.99 I was graced with enough food for two meals. It’s safe to say I will find my way back soon.
