Qur’an – Chapter 42: Verse 38; “Those who hearken to the Lord, and establish regular Prayer; who (conduct) their affairs by mutual Consultation; who spend out of what We bestow on them for sustenance…”
When Allah created each of us, He was creating an intellect, and the high respect that Allah has for our individual brain power is awesome. The angels expressed concern about the possibility of free thinkers to make errors and even to commit sins, but Allah told them, “I know what you know not,” and then He told the angels to bow (submit your service) to this free-thinker ā the human being.
The ultimate goal of every human being’s struggle is to achieve the status consciousness with a conscience ā an awareness of their environment that is supported by having knowledge or the ability to discern what is right from what is wrong in their environment. Such people qualify to have an independent voice and vote in their society.
The above Qur’an verse applauds those who (conduct) their affairs by mutual Consultation. This verse commends those who observe the democratic rule of “one man/woman-one vote.” To further support this high respect for the intelligence of each individual person, as written in the Qur’an (chapter 39; verse 41), “(Muhammed)…you are not the disposer of their affairs.”
This again, further emphasizes that each individual in society is obligated to use the best of their intellect, Allah, while reaffirming that Muhammed is the Messenger of Allah, reminds us that Muhammed is not responsible for our conduct. Chapter 33:40, reads, “Muhammed is not the father of any of your men, but he is the Messenger of Allah, and the Seal of the Prophets….”
Respecting the thinking ability of every citizen in our society builds trust. The same is true for our American democracy.
If we are to maintain public trust in democracy, then we cannot allow others to dominate our voice. Also, the candidates whom we elect to office should not seek to override the will and the voice of the people. As duly elected lawmakers and policymakers, they are sworn to work for the benefit of the citizens; each of our honorable elected officials is duty-bound to respect the will of the people.
In Indiana, the majority of Senators followed the rule of democracy and made history when they followed the legal requirements and listened to the overwhelming voices of conscious-minded individuals by not supporting midterm redistricting.
Our Indiana Senators and our Democrats reassured the citizenry that their voice in Indiana did not fall victim to an outside interest power grab. This is the type of democracy that the Qur’an is encouraging when it speaks of those, “who (conduct) their affairs by mutual Consultation.”
The voice and the vote of each American is a sacred right; thus, any denial of the sacrosanct right to vote is repugnant in the political nostrils of both Democrats and Republicans. It is repugnant to human decency when/if we allow outside forces to interfere with internal politics.
When the outside dominance of the British was imposed on the pre-colonial Englishmen, or when slavery and Jim Crow sought to invade the minds and souls of African Americans, such outside intrusions were repugnant to the Englishmen and also to the enslaved Africans. There is something innately special within all human beings when outsiders invade upon their voice and their vote.
In closing, we applaud our Indiana legislature for grasping the opportunity to model for America the beauty of a democracy that respects the will and intelligence of our citizenry. We modeled for America and the world that democracy is ordained by Allah (G_d). We thank Allah for the freedoms that He innately instilled in every human being ā the ability to evolve into thinking humans with a consciousness for doing the right thing while respecting the consciousness of our fellow human beings.
