Sherron Freeman is the first African-American elected to the Common Council of the City of Lawrence. Recently, while the council passed a resolution celebrating Black History Month, the city also recognized Freeman for making history as the first African-American on the council. Lawrence, a city of more than 46,000 people, lacked political and racial diversity in its elected offices until the 2003 election, when Deborah Cantwell was elected the first Democrat and first woman to serve as mayor. The nine-member council now has five African-Americans. Freeman, also a Democrat, has served on the council since 2008. She said she is most proud of being able to secure necessary funding for public safety and supporting economic development.
