This weekend, Luck gets chance to end Manning era

More by this author

It is hard for true fans to turn the page in sports, especially when it involves an iconic figure. Many continue to believe in their heroes, even when they finish a career elsewhere and represent the opposition. Yes, those who have provided us with the joy of victory and that elusive championship are indeed cherished and held in the highest regard.

However, at some point one era ends, another begins. This weekend provides an opportunity for just that scenario as Andrew Luck runs out onto the field in Denver to lead the Indianapolis Colts against Peyton Manning and the Broncos.

Sure, it has been three years now since Number 18 left town after the Colts wisely declined to pick up the expensive option, but many still cling to the memories despite having a stud in Andrew Luck who continues to put up big numbers. Yes, l know they’ve already faced off before, but this one is different, as it combines playoff ramifications as well as the dreaded comparison of the two by tons of you fans out there.

There really isn’t much to compare as Luck is ascending to the top of Quarterback Mountain while Manning is simply trying to turn back the clock while he treads water in the twilight of a storied career.

Leading the Colts to a victory over the Broncos will officially exorcise all the demons attached to the Manning Era and bury them forever. A loss on the other hand allows the ridiculous dialogue regarding the comparison to continue.

Luck will tell you it is strictly about getting the win and moving on, but you know the competitor in him thinks differently and wants the double whammy. Regardless of what happens Sunday, the Colts are set at quarterback for years to come. A victory would allow the ghost of Peyton Manning to finally exit Lucas Oil Stadium, and in the process rightfully acknowledge just how phenomenal Luck has been in his short career. Then again, we should have stopped the comparisons some time ago, and now Luck is poised to force the matter himself.
