First watch specializes in fresh, interesting fare

A new eatery has come into town that will leave even more kitchens abandoned on the weekends and throughout the week – First Watch, a daytime café.

Brothers Ken and Paul Pendery serve as president and vice president of First Watch. They own several restaurants across the U.S. and thought it was time to open a location in Indiana – the state where they completed their undergraduate degrees.

“We love Indianapolis and want everyone to eat here,” said Paul. “It’s affordable and our atmosphere is pretty personable and laid back.”

For those who believe First Watch has your typical breakfast/brunch food, you are in for a treat. Everything is made to order and there is an emphasis on fresh food in addition to a substantial amount of choices on their “The Healthier Side” portion of the menu.

“There’s not a lot of fat and we don’t have fryers. For example, our potatoes are blanched, then we finish them off on a grill,” said Paul.

In addition to healthy items like the Energy Bowl, house made granola or Muesli cereal; there are a lot of standard breakfast items served with a twist.

Take the Crepeggs for example, a thin, sweet crepe combined with whipped eggs served with seasoned potatoes and an English muffin. Or the Key West Crepe filled with turkey, avocado, bacon, tomatoes and Monterey Jack topped with sour cream and fresh, house made salsa.

First Watch also specializes in eggs made with almost any type of topping you can think of. The Casa Fritatta with roasted tomatoes, spinach, herbed goat cheese and sliced breakfast sausage sounds amazing. You can even spruce up your Eggs Benedict with toppings like ham and tomato or Florentine style with fresh spinach, avocado and tomato.

The omelette choices at First Watch are great too. The Killer Cajun has spicy Cajun all-natural white-meat chicken breast with house-roasted crimini mushrooms, onions and Monterey Jack; while the Gravy Train has bacon, sausage, house roasted onions with Cheddar and Monterey Jack topped with turkey sausage gravy.

You can’t have a breakfast restaurant without pancakes and waffles. They serve up some pretty big stacks too! Their multigrain pancakes come in various flavors such as plain, blueberry, cranberry or bacon and cheddar. There’s also Belgian waffles; French toast or Floridian French toast made with sourdough bread, wheat germ and powdered cinnamon sugar covered with fresh banana, kiwi and berries.

First Watch also has a variety of side items and beverages to wash down your breakfast.

If you’re not in the mood for breakfast or brunch, First Watch has a full lunch menu too that has a wide variety of salads and sandwiches. Try the Fruity Chicken salad, all-natural white-meat chicken salad served with baby spinach, tomato, seasonal fruit and poppyseed dressing; or the Pesto Roast Beef sandwich, roast beef, roasted tomatoes, spinach and Swiss, with pickled red onion and a basil pesto spread on grilled sourdough.

If you’re getting hungry, hop in your car and head to First Watch. Just make sure you get there before closing time, 2:30 p.m.
